Wrong On Every Level: Senate Hopeful Suggests Rape Yields A Gift From God

richard-mourdock-
You’d think ultra-conservative male Senate hopefuls would have learned a thing or two from the “legitimate rape” debacle — after all, Todd Akin’s comments didn’t just cause a national uproar; they will also probably cost him what many thought was a sure win in his race against Sen. Claire McCaskill.
But last night, Richard Mourdock, a Senate candidate from Indiana, said during a debate that “life is a gift from God, and I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that is something that God intended to happen.”
So… rape pregnancies are a gift from God? Perhaps that’s why he believes abortion should only be allowed to save the life of the mother – not in cases of rape or incest.

If that's not appalling enough, consider that Mourdock has already secured a primary win against long-time senator Richard Lugar, who was well-known for his history of across-the-aisle cooperation for the sake of getting legislation passed.
Oh, and worse still? Mourdock has been endorsed by Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney. Romney’s campaign was quick to say the presidential candidate disagrees with the Senate candidate’s comments, but still. It doesn’t sound like he came to this decision overnight. (Washington Post)
