Yigal Azrouel (Swoon!) Talks Miami, Cut25, & His Ideal Woman

Ladies can’t resist Cut 25 and Yigal Azrouël ’s eponymous brand, which is rife with neons, prints, and flowy silhouettes worn by those with downtown leanings. Azrouël launched his line in 1998 and just two years later, he was featuring his designs at New York Fashion Week (where today he is still headlining). When he stopped by Bal Harbour Shops’ Saks Fifth Avenue to promote his dreamy spring '12 collection, he chatted us up on why he might open a store in Miami’s Design District (hint: it’s his favorite spot to shop), his affinity for surfing, Miami’s amazing energy, and the kind of woman for which he likes to design. (sigh)

What is the difference between the diffusion line Cut 25 and your eponymous line?
"Cut 25 is a younger, trendier and has a lower price point then my other collection."
Why the name Cut 25?
"My lucky number is 25 because I was born on that day in August and in the alphabet, the 25th letter is Y."
Where are you staying in Miami?
"I’m staying in St. Regis. It’s a beautiful hotel. I always feel like I’m on vacation in Miami. I’m just here for the day and leaving tomorrow morning. Next, I’m going to Israel next for Passover, so I'm hoping to rest."
Tell us about the Miami woman who likes to wear your clothes.
"She’s definitely more feminine and sexier. When I design I’m always thinking of a woman who is confident and who doesn’t follow trends that don't work for them. Someone who is fashion-forward and effortless. It can really be anybody."
When you’re not designing what do you like to do?
"Surfing. I’d be a surfer for the rest of my life. My sister lives in San Diego so I surf there a lot."
Are there any chances of you opening a store in Miami one day?
"Actually, I was talking about that the other day. I might in the Design District. I like to shop there."
