Issa Rae
26-year-old Issa Rae got her comedy start when she began writing and directing short films while she was a student at Stanford. After college, Rae created the web series “The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl,” which attracted some big-time attention and helped get Rae signed with a talent agency.

Self-Deprecating Autobiographical Role: J in “Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl”

Hollywood Fairy Godmother(s): Chris Rock and Hannibal Burress

Awkward Trademark: Everything. The show revolves around Rae’s Larry David/Liz Lemon-esque responses to everyday situations.

Upcoming: Season 2 of “Awkward Black Girl” premieres online this summer.

Extra Credit: Issa also has a series, “FLY GUYS present The ‘F’ Word,” a mockumentary about a hip hop group trying to make it in the music industry.

The Takeaway: Play to your strengths.
