Uma by COMO Punakha (Bhutan)
For a long haul, all-out zen getaway, try the new Uma by COMO in Punakha, Bhutan, an 11-room sanctuary tucked between rice terraces and orchards in a lush valley along the Mo Chu River. The minimalist rooms have valley or pine forest views, but you’ll likely be outside on a photography excursion or trekking the hillsides if you’re not taking a hot stone bath in the Shambhala Retreat spa or partaking in the complimentary daily yoga class. The hotel works with its sister property in Paro (about a five-hour drive away) to book cultural day trips to places like the gravity-defying Tiger’s Nest monastery, the temple of the Divine Madman, and (in late February) the Punakha Dromche and Tshechu, two celebratory festivals packed with color, drums, dance, costumes, horns, masks, and a re-enactment of Bhutan’s 17th-century war with Tibet.
