Believe it or not, I got engaged in my bedroom closet. Carrie Bradshaw would be so jealous. My amazing Prince Charming got down on one knee amongst some of my longtime friends: Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin, and Jimmy Choo. The place of proposal was unexpected, I admit, but the moment couldn’t have been more perfect and I was over the moon with happiness. What was even more amazing is that when I walked downstairs, I found my parents sitting in the kitchen waiting to surprise me. Scott had secretly flown them in from Kentucky. I was floored. It was truly a magical moment.

He asked. I said yes. What now?

We got engaged in May and married in September of that same year. It was a whirlwind, for sure. There was no basking in the bliss of our engagement. It was serious go-time. There were moments I questioned my sanity, times I wanted to elope, days I wanted to run for the hills to a land where marriage didn’t exist — but, in the end, we did it. We tied the knot and had a big wedding celebration to help us celebrate our love.

In hindsight, I would consider that engagement to be a kind of pre-married life boot camp. I learned a lot about myself, my husband-to-be, friends, family, and tolerance for stress.

When those seemingly catastrophic wedding-planning moments arise — and, they will — the most vital thing to remember is the reason why you are getting married in the first place.

Let that love help carry you through the hype and stress of wedding planning. Dearest brides-to-be, without further adieu, these are the things I wish I'd known. Let them serve as advice to you as you embark on this incredible, one-of-a-kind journey.
