At Long Last: The Return Of Panda Head Mag

pandaslide1

Since we were introduced waaaaay back when she was one of D.C.'s first bloggers, we've been quite fond of Morgan Hungerford. The stylist, visual merchandiser and all-around creative force has been cooking up cool projects for years, the most current being Panda Head magazine, a digital zine full of original video, photography, artwork, and more. But the mag was put on pause after five issues, and fans have been waiting patiently for nearly a year for Issue 6.

Today's good news? It's finally here! Click on over to Panda Head to see the full issue, which includes a lovely spring fashion feature and illustrations by Lauren Friedman. ( Panda Head )

Get Your Front-Row Fashion Fix At This Stylish Shindig In Bethesda

GSMS-Poster_800pxslide Need a quick style boost to get you geared up for spring? How about a three-day affair that involves book signings, runway events, trunk shows, discounts, and more? Yeah, we thought that'd do the trick. It's time for Bethesda Row's fourth annual The Front Row event, which kicks off tomorrow with a free screening of this year's most major fashion flick, God Save My Shoes.

On Friday, Andy Cohen (Executive VP of Development and Talent for Bravo, and host of Watch What Happens: Live) will sign copies of his new book; afterward, you can catch a fashion show highlighting designer looks from some of our favorite shops on Bethesda Row. Oh, and in between events, be sure to stop and snag makeup touch-ups from Aveda and mini-massages from The Spa @ Equinox, or make your own floral fascinators, bib necklaces, and headbands at H.Bloom's Bud Bar. Head back on Sunday for brunch offers, kid-friendly activities, and special shopping deals. If that's not a solid reason to get psyched for summer, we don't know what is.

When: Thursday, May 17, through Sunday, May 19. See a full schedule of events here; RSVP for the film screening here.
Where: Bethesda Front Row, 4950 Elm Street, Bethesda.

So Long, Carla Bruni — Thanks For Keeping It Classy

On Sunday, French president Nicolas Sarkozy lost his reelection bid to François Hollande, which means his wife, former model/singer/actress Carla Bruni, will soon step down from her post as the most fashionable First Lady of France.

We were quite fond of la première dame's style choices, from her ultra-chic maternity duds to her knack for choosing surprising (but always ladylike) silhouettes. Check out a slideshow of her best looks over the years, and ponder this: Will her replacement be able to hang with the likes of Michelle Obama and European royals, sartorially speaking? (The Cut)

FLOTUS In Balenciaga? We Approve

From the way she rocked her Jason Wu inaugural gown to her mastery of the everyday J.Crew ensemble, Michelle Obama has earned a permanent place on our style radar. On her most recent trip to the Midwest, the First Lady stepped up her game in the luxe department, sporting a printed Balenciaga shift from the Resort '10 collection.

Obama was speaking to attendees at a Girls, Inc. event in Omaha, and at the very least, we're guessing the audience had a touch of fashion fever after listening to the FLOTUS. What do you think of her decidedly spring-y frock? (The Cut)

This WW Club Event Is Totally Worth It (Hint: Booze & Boys Involved)

wwclubslide

As if we haven’t given you enough reasons to hit the Water Street Project already, stylist Elise Peterson (resident pro at It's Vintage Darling) and photographer Kate Warren have now teamed up to host The WW Club, a menswear party featuring whiskey, a burlesque performance, and cool duds from some of our favorite local outposts.

Bring your fella of choice along for a stylish excursion he'll actually enjoy; if you're single, keep an eye out for your own Jay Gatsby (we’re hoping for the Leo DiCaprio variety) clad in pinstripes and cufflinks. A $10 ticket gets you into the so-called "style speakeasy" to sample a variety of whiskeys, swoon over a naughty-but-nice performance by Cherrie Sweetbottom, and get one-on-one style advice from the gurus at Federal, Alton Lane, and Dr. K's Vintage. We can't think of a more perfect opportunity to party like it’s Prohibition.

When: Thursday, April 26, from 7 to 10 p.m.
Where: 3401 Water Street NW.

Go Nuts! T.J. Maxx Opens Its 1,000th Store In D.C. Today

Store-Exteriorslide

Yesterday, we were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the new T.J. Maxx store downtown, and we're not gonna lie — we kinda lost our minds for a minute. The store officially opened this morning at 8 a.m., and while we don't suggest making tracks down there on opening day (madhouse alert!), you'll definitely want to make this a regular stop on your shopping agenda. The massive store is packed with great stuff, from $5K Ralph Lauren Purple Label gowns and bejeweled Prada tanks to cases of glittering jewelry and an expertly edited shoe section.

The somewhat-hidden store (the entrance is around the corner from Banana Republic, on F Street) is the company's 1,000th flagship, and the brand's new marketing direction — focusing more on current trends and high-end fashion, less on the discount component — is clearly at work here. We spotted super on-trend pieces, like a French Connection short lace dress and tribal-inspired wedges, plus plenty of practical shifts and pumps for work and the weekend. And truth be told, the prices are some of the best we've seen recently — when was the last time you saw Nine West heeled sandals for $35? So, may we recommend a long lunch sometime this week? (Or today, if you're feeling brave...)

Where: 601 13th Street NW (entrance on F Street NW); 202-637-1261.

Team Obama Vs. Team Romney: The Fashion Industry Splits Up

With the presidential election just seven months away, campaign fundraising for Barack Obama and Mitt Romney is ramping up, and WWD reports that the numbers seem to indicate that each party will spend nearly $1 billion towards their own campaign — and the fashion industry will play some part in keeping the politicians' pockets padded. Though Obama is still leading in fashion-industry donations, Romney is ranked second as of this February, receiving fashion industry monetary support from Emanuel Chirico of PVH ($2,500), Paul Marciano of Guess ($2,500), and Ed Emma of Jockey ($450). Compare this with Team Obama's fashion fans, including Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch, Leonard Lauder of Estée Lauder, and Robert Haas of Levi Strauss, who each donated $5,000, the maximum for individual contributions. In total, fashion players have donated around $435,000 so far, with 53.9% going to Obama and 45.9% to Republican candidates (including Romney), which — in fashion speak — is 212 PS1 bags, 660 Isabel Marant sneakers, and 78 Cartier Love bracelets. Ann Romney Vs. Michelle Obama: The Ultimate Fashion Face-Off?

An election battle between President Obama and GOP candidate Mitt Romney will be interesting in its own right, but what about the sartorial showdown between their style-savvy wives? We're extra-intrigued to see what the current First Lady will be donning, come November, and also, how her competition stacks up when the political heat is really on.

The Huffington Post's Fashion Whip bloggers Christina Wilkie and Lauren Rothman dished some advice for Ann Romney recently, recommending regular blowouts to keep her tresses looking sleek and polished. Also on the agenda? Develop a signature style, like Michelle Obama did during her first year in the White House, and incorporate a bit more Sarah Palin-esque glamour — think a hot pair of shoes or some pretty lipgloss.

What do you think? Should Ann Romney step up her style game, or keep it low-key? We all know appearances play a role in the political process, but how do you think this will all play out? (Huffington Post)
