Acid Test

The signature '80s look has an artful moment. By Christene Barberich & Piera Gelardi

Few trends from the '80s have as much iconic punch as acid wash. Not even big shoulders nor the highest hair can eclipse its signature brand of glam-trash. Though many of us weren't around when acid-wash first made its debut in malls everywhere, its return is decidedly more demure and dare we say, artful.

In a few of our favorite looks, once reckless Tiffany'esque splashes of bleach are more painterly, or, taken in the other direction (as with Karen Walker's stormy-blue trousers), baggy denim is all but bleached out. Hands down, the best looks retain a bit of that Jersey girl vibe, but with this time around, acid-wash is way more treasure than trash.
