How Our Childhood Icon Convinced Us To Eat Our Veggies

Not only is Tia Mowry one of my favorite childhood celebrities and a fashion icon, she's also an ace in the kitchen. In fact, her new show, Tia Mowry At Home, is set to premiere later this month on the Cooking Channel. I got a sneak peak at her culinary chops when I got to cook with her as part of Refinery29's #GimmeFive challenge.

Here, Mowry shows me how to make one of the most polarizing foods out there — looking at you, broccoli — appealing to everyone, even veggie haters. In fact, she makes this dish for her 3-year-old son, and he gobbles it up every time. The key is to give the florets a quick sauté so they're nice and crispy, add some flavor boosters, and BAM! You've got the easiest-ever healthy side.

Tia's Broccoli Sauté
Serves 4-6

Ingredients
3 heads of broccoli, cut into florets (or 2 10-oz bags of broccoli florets)
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp pepper flakes
1 lemon, juiced and zested

Instructions
1. In a steamer set over a pot of simmering water, add the broccoli. Cover and steam until al dente, about 5 minutes.

2. Carefully remove the broccoli and plunge into icy water. Let cool completely before removing from the water. Pat dry and set aside.

3. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and allow it to heat up for about 30 seconds (do not let it to get so hot that it smokes). Add the broccoli, salt, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes, and sauté until soft and brown around the edges, about 8 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and add the lemon juice and zest. Enjoy.
