This Is Our Jam: Gang Gang Dance, "Chinese High (Nguzunguzu Remix)"

gang-gang
The number one adjective used describe Gang Gang Dance is probably “unclassifiable,” which is hardly an adjective at all. With this year’s phenomenal Eye Contact, the New York group released their most accessible album to date, but even so, their eclectic mix of world music, house, and every other genre under the sun remained more “Gang Gang” than “Dance” (if that makes any sense).

Enter: L.A. producers Nguzunguzu, tour mates of Gang Gang Dance, who make bass music with a similarly eclectic palette. Here, the duo take album highlight “Chinese High,” and tightened the track up, doling out clipped snippets of sound, one by one. In Nguzunguzu’s hands, the syncopated rhythm becomes something resembling a traditional dance track, preserving the warped oddness of “Chinese High” while re-fashioning the song for a new arena. It’s still unmistakably Gang Gang, but now the emphasis is on the “Dance” part of the equation.
