The Thing Quarterly Turns Five! Relive Its Best Issues, Right Here

It’s hard to ignore the tech-related tidbits that flood the S.F. scene these days, but — call us old-school — sometimes we prefer a tangible treat over a shiny-new app or other electronic doodad. We’re pretty sure S.F.-based The Thing Quarterly relates, what with its object-centric "issues" that offer a creative, conceptual peek into the minds of top filmmakers, artists, and musicians. Who could forget those infamous James Franco switchblades?
Well, the out-of-the-box (literally!) periodical is turning five and, to celebrate, is hosting a no-holds-barred bash at Southern Exposure for its 18th issue, which features an object crafted by filmmaker Mike Mills. The soiree will have a special wrapping party (guests can help box the issue if they’d like), plus beats, beer, and birthday cake! What more do you need? We have the additional deets below, but first check out The Thing Quarterly’s fave issues from the past five years. Can’t make it to the shindig? Don’t stress. Be sure to get your fix by pre-ordering the Mike Mills issue here!
When: Wednesday, October 3, 5 to 9 p.m.
Where: Southern Exposure, 3030 20th Street (at Alabama Street); 415-863-2141.
