One Mad Men Star On How To Take The Perfect Foodie Instagram

Around the time of the Mad Men premiere, we decided to sit down with Kiernan Shipka. Shipka is both wise beyond her years and sweet as can be, and when she showed up on a street corner in East Hollywood (for breakfast at Sqirl) we couldn’t decide what we wanted more —the French toast she ordered or her vintage Celine sweater.

The incredibly chic 14-year-old has managed to steal the hearts of the fashion industry (and ours as well), and as she directed us to the very best vintage shopping and sushi in L.A., we were tempted to ask her to join us. That’s right, we have a teenage girl crush; anything can happen in Hollywood…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?
For breakfast, I’d have avocado toast. Avocado with a squeeze of lemon, some salt, chili flakes, and pepper…it’s kind of the perfect breakfast. For lunch, I’d definitely do sushi. For dinner, I’d have to go with French food. I typically go out to dinner with my family on weekends, and we usually all order something different so we can try a bit of everything. I would order the bouillabaisse. For dessert, I love donuts. Plain beignets are my favorite, but honestly, I like any kind of donut.

What are some typical pre and post shoot routines?
My pre-shoot routine is waking up, getting ready, and grabbing a smoothie on my way to set. My post-shoot routine, depending on the day and time, is going to some sort of class or having dinner!

What’s always in your bag on set?
My computer, my phone, and usually a book!

What’s a typical lunch like on the set of Mad Men?
Lunches are fun because everyone involved in the production comes together. You get to see a lot of people you wouldn’t normally see or work with, and it’s really great.

What's your go-to snack on set?
It’s always changing, but currently, maybe an avocado (I have such an obsession…I even did a paper on avocados for school), a pack of seaweed, or fruit. I also love snacking on pomegranate seeds.

What would your last meal be? Who would it be with?
My last meal would definitely be with my family, and it would probably include an amazing burger. I don’t think it gets better than that. I’d also have truffle fries and a milkshake, because, why not?

What catches your eye on every menu?
Things that sound adventurous on menus always catch my eye. Usually, if the restaurant has a staple dish listed, I’ll try it — or at least convince someone at my table to order it so I can have a few bites.

What are three great tricks to creating the very best food Instagrams?
I like to amp up the clarity, brightness, and contrast with an app called Afterlight. I love to square all of my photos so they have white borders with Afterlight, Vintique, or Squaready. I like to post what I think looks cool!

What are some of your favorite spots to shop in L.A.?
Acne Studios just opened up a store Downtown that’s awesome! I also love rag & bone, as well as Opening Ceremony.

Your three favorite items in your closet?
My black vintage Celine sweater I got at a consignment store, my black rag & bone booties, and my Chanel loafers that I found at a vintage store.

If you could switch closets with one person in the world who would it be?
Probably Alexa Chung.

Where are some L.A. spots we’d be sure to find Sally Draper?
I think Sally would be shopping on Melrose during the day. I feel like she’d go to some fun roller rink at night. Then maybe she’d grab a late dinner at Canter’s.

What are some fun facts about your cast members we may not know?
Despite the fact that they’re all extremely talented, dramatic actors, they’re hilarious. And, we love games, especially Catch Phrase! and Heads Up! When there’s any down time, we’re playing one of the two.

What are your favorite cities for food and where do you go in each?
In L.A., I usually go out on the weekends with my friends and family. For brunch, I love Cooks County, Sqirl, and BLD. Dinner-wise, Jitlada is always delicious and spicy! One of the owners, Jazz, is the funniest person. She has this great necklace that you get to hold and make a wish. It’s very fun. I love sushi, and currently, Sugarfish is my favorite. On weekdays, I love when I’m able to grab a smoothie for breakfast at Naturewell. M Cafe is great for healthy lunches. In New York, I love Nobu! It’s my go-to, and when I go to New York, I’m usually only there for a day or two at a time.

What's your earliest funny memory on the set of Mad Men?
I remember, one season in particular, everyone was getting super into Words With Friends and it was funny to see it roll out. We were all getting so competitive, but it was so fun.

Also, my first day on set, I had to wear a plastic bag over my head. It was the first time Sally was ever seen, and it was just such a humorous moment. There was a stunt coordinator and everything. It all felt so official. I couldn’t have been more excited.
