The Glow's Violet Gaynor Lets Us Into Her Amaze NYC Pad

In 2011, before BFFs Kelly Stuart and Violet Gaynor had kids of their own, they launched The Glow — a glimpse into the world of inspiring, stylish moms. Swoon with us as we thumb through the archives in preparation for their next venture: an equally addictive book that'll feel right at home on your coffee table. This was originally published Jan 4.
When Kelly and I first created The Glow, we were both 31 years old and more than a little overwhelmed by the idea of having children — and how we could possibly balance motherhood and our beloved careers. Fast forward to a very different picture today: Kelly is newly married and I just welcomed my first child into the world. Truth be told, my daughter, Plum Lillian, is not the only baby in our lives right now. This spring, right before Mother's Day in fact, we will come out with The Glow book.

Despite being a new mom, and the co-founder of a site about motherhood, the idea of featuring myself on The Glow hadn’t crossed my mind. Ten-plus years as an editor and stylist has kept me happily behind-the-scenes. The chance to collaborate with J.Crew, one of The Glow's favorite brands, changed all that. The launch of their too-cute-for-words baby collection seemed like the perfect time to step in front of the camera. Here, Kelly turns her lens on me as we share a glimpse into my home and the world I've created for my little one.

"I’ve never been one of those girls who fantasized about their wedding, but becoming a mom has always been my ultimate dream. So, it took me by surprise that I didn’t instantly know what to do after getting home from the hospital. I kept waiting for the answers to just come to me, but what I realized was that I had to let myself take the time to get to know this new little being in my life. Instead of trying to get her to fit into some pre-determined mold I’d read about in a baby book, I had to let go a little and let her guide me. Through giving up control (not my strong suit), I was able to start listening to that little voice inside that usually knows what to do." "One of my oldest and dearest friends, the insanely talented illustrator Samantha Hahn, created this for Plum. My dad introduced me to the poem and I fell in love with its sweet simplicity. Sam brought it to life with her dreamy watercolor letters."

"Even at four months old, it’s quite obvious that my daughter has a stubborn streak. For better or worse, I have to take credit for that." On Violet: J.Crew animal print blouse; On Plum: Bonpoint dress.

"As a baby shower gift, Kelly put together a beautiful basket filled with some of my favorite things, including a bottle of rosé, this dreamcatcher, and a beautiful knit bunny for Plum. The fashion designer Jenni Kayne gave me the idea to use hot pink tape as a décor accent and I've been hooked ever since."

"I was born and raised in Manhattan, and it makes me so happy to know that my daughter will also get to experience the wonders of childhood in the city. Central Park, the Museum of Natural History, the subway! My sister and I grew up going to see Charlie Chaplin movies at the Film Forum, and hearing live music at The Bottom Line. I can’t wait to share those experiences with Plum." J.Crew Baby onesie; Moroccan rug.

"I’ve always had a simple four-step routine (Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer with SPF, Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation, Bobbi Brown blush, and Aveda Mosscara) and not much has changed. I used to be able to get away with skipping the mascara from time to time, but the extreme sleep deprivation I’ve experienced over the past four months has made this last step absolutely necessary. The glossy formula instantly brightens my eyes and makes me look like I’ve gotten more than four consecutive hours of sleep."

On Violet: vintage Alaïa dress, Jennifer Fisher "The Glow" necklace, and Made Her Think cuff ("On my wedding day, I gave this rose gold cuff to Kelly as a thank you gift. Three years later, on her own wedding day, she gave me the very same thing. We both wear it everyday."); On Plum: J.Crew Baby onesie.

"A few weeks after Plum arrived, Kelly and I went to Brooklyn to photograph Molly Guy of Stone Fox Bride for The Glow. It was my first time leaving the baby, and I was more than a little anxious. Molly made me feel so at ease and even proud of myself for getting out of my sweatpants and onto the subway. A week after the shoot, this handmade dreamcatcher arrived with a beautiful note from Molly that said 'Sweet dreams, Plum.'"

"Since I chose not to find out if I was having a boy or girl, I wasn’t able to go crazy shopping for baby clothes during my pregnancy. My one moment of weakness was when Kelly and I were in Paris shooting for our book — who can resist French baby clothes? While I do love to dress Plum in frilly, girly pieces, I’ve found that, because I’m so in love with her soft, chubby little body, I’d rather put her in nothing more than a pair of bloomers when we’re home. I need easy access to those thighs!" On Violet: J.Crew Liberty blouse, vintage cut-offs; On Plum: J.Crew Baby chambray bloomers.

"Creating Plum’s room was a team effort. Since Kelly and I both have full-time jobs we're passionate about, and we were also working on the weekends to create our book throughout my pregnancy, it didn't leave me with much time to get the baby’s room ready. By eight months along, I started to freak out. So I turned to my sweet friend, and former Glow mama, Athena Calderone. Together with her super talented design partner, John Rawlins, we went about creating a dreamy, gender-neutral oasis out of a tiny office. Funnily enough, since I’ve lived in this apartment since high school, the nursery actually used to be my bedroom (back then, I proudly rocked lavender wall-to-wall carpet)." Oeuf crib, J.Crew blanket, Eskayel wallpaper, Nursery Works rocker, Confetti System garland, and Moroccan rug.

"During my pregnancy, I became obsessed with Tracy Anderson's Pregnancy Project. The nine DVD set follows Anderson throughout her entire pregnancy, which made me feel like I was working out with a friend. And, the challenging-but-still-manageable exercises made me feel so energetic (as someone who didn't work out before getting pregnant, I was surprised by how committed I became to this routine). When I was six months along, we had the pleasure of photographing Tracy and her adorable daughter for our book, and she told me that not only was the Pregnancy Project going to make my labor easier, but it would also help me bounce back after the birth. She was right on both fronts." On Violet: J.Crew Liberty blouse, vintage cut-offs; On Plum: J.Crew Baby chambray bloomers.

"Originally, I was just going to paint one wall gray, and leave the rest of the room white. But, as soon as I saw this Eskayel wallpaper, I couldn't stop thinking about it. The dreamy design made me feel so calm. After that was decided, we added the colorful Moroccan rug and raw silk drapes from The Shade Store. The Oeuf crib was a generous hand-me-down from a lovely friend. One of the most meaningful pieces in the room is actually the gray wool “toy bin,” called Nesta's Nest, which was Plum’s bassinet for the first three months of her life. I love that we can still use it everyday, but in a very different way." On Violet: J.Crew Liberty blouse, vintage cut-offs; On Plum: J.Crew Baby chambray bloomers.

"This Confetti System garland was displayed in the entryway of my mom's apartment at my baby shower. Now it's one of my favorite things in Plum's room. She loves to stare at it while we're sitting in the rocking chair."

Aden + Anais Bamboo Swaddles: "These are not only the softest things in the world, but they’re also gorgeous! The colors and prints are so unique. Ever since we featured the photographer Zoe Buckman and her daughter Cleo on The Glow, and I saw her feather print swaddle I knew I had to have one. For our birth announcement, we used a photo of Plum wrapped in one of these and nothing else. It’s just that pretty."

Books: "Since very early on, my husband and I have been able to entertain Plum for long stretches of time by reading to her. Current favorites are I Took The Moon for a Walk and Madeline.

Bugaboo Cameleon 3: "Picking a stroller is a super personal decision. The customizable colors and smooth ride of this one totally won me over."

"My husband is the most hands-on, loving, thoughtful father. While our relationship has definitely changed since our daughter was born (and we desperately miss going out to dinner at 10 p.m. on a whim), we’ve reached a new level of closeness." On Violet: vintage dress; On Plum: Lemlem bloomers.

"I searched long and hard for the perfect chair for the nursery, and this one by Nursery Works has proven to be everything I was looking for. It’s super comfy, blends in with the rest of the room, and was more affordable than lots of similar options out there. I get excited every time I sit in it with my daughter." "The whole concept of a uniform has become very important to me since becoming a mom. For the first few months, I lived in dresses — comfy and no thought involved. Now that I’m back to work, my go-to pieces are button-downs of all varieties paired with jeans and boots. For evening, I switch out the boots for pumps." On Plum: J.Crew Baby cashmere sweater.

"My mother-in-law once told me that no matter how hard a certain phase seems, just when you think you can’t handle it anymore, your baby grows out of it. This has been especially true when it comes to sleep. Just when I thought I was about to give up on ever getting a decent night’s sleep again, Plum starting sleeping for six-hour stretches." J.Crew Liberty blouse, Jennifer Fisher "The Glow" necklace.

"My mom and sister (a mother of two) are my role models. They were both born to be moms and their wisdom is what gets me through the day."
