Molly Guy Of Stone Fox Bride's Must-See Sanctuary

In 2011, before BFFs Kelly Stuart and Violet Gaynor had kids of their own, they launched The Glow — a glimpse into the world of inspiring, stylish moms. Swoon with us as we thumb through the archives in preparation for their next venture: an equally addictive book that'll feel right at home on your coffee table.
After spending five minutes with Stone Fox Bride creative director, Molly Guy, three things become crystal clear: She's a girl's girl, has impeccable taste, and possesses the kind of perfectly tousled hair most of us only dream of. With her bohemian style and sarcastic wit, she's the perfect combination of modern day hippie goddess and savvy New Yorker.

After getting engaged in 2010, and realizing she couldn't find the type of nontraditional styles she so craved for her own wedding, she quit her job as an editor and created Stone Fox Bride, the ultimate resource for the anti-bride. Two years later, the brand has gained a loyal following, including fellow Glow mama Jemima Kirke.

When she's not making dreams come true for brides-to-be, Guy can be found spending time with her daughter Sunny in their three-story Brooklyn townhouse. As a new mom, Guy firmly believes that fellow mothers should “drown out the noise” and trust their instincts. Sunny, sixteen months, September 2013

"When it comes to being a mother, don't listen to anyone. Absolutely no one. Ignore all of it: the breastfeeding tips, the sleep-training dogma, the attachment parenting books, the wooden toys credo, food allergies hysteria, EVERYTHING. Being a mom is about developing your own style, just like anything else. Your kid is going to be complicated and tormented and amazing just like every other human being that walks this earth no matter what, so trust your instincts and drown out the noise. The only person who knows what your child needs is you."

For Kids Clothes & Gear...
"I cannot live without Ryan Roche cashmere shawls. I keep two of them in her crib and use them as baby blankets. They are just so soft. I live for Ryan's clothing line, Mor Mor Rita, too. The silhouettes of her blouses and baby skirts have this really chic little French thing going on. Another favorite for kid's clothes is my friend Bronagh's store, Sweet William. In terms of gear, for the first year of Sunny’s life she lived in a little cotton papoose that I slung around my shoulder called the Ring Sling. I got it at Caribou Baby in Williamsburg. Everywhere I went she was tucked inside it and I would just throw a poncho over so she could sleep." Stokke Crib, available at Stokke; Confetti System Garland, $130, available at Confetti System.

"There are some mornings when I'm cutting up my daughter’s grapes into fours after three hours of sleep while the sun is coming up and I’m in a flannel granny moomoo and NPR is on and I’m like, 'Where’s my cigarettes, where’s my naughty Saturday night fling and ripped black lace lingerie and I just wanna call in sick to work and take Klonopin and google all my exes and only eat gummi bears all day.' Falling in love, becoming a mother and growing up in general has this sort of beautiful 'deal with devil' vibe to it. The amount of wisdom and love you gain is directly proportionate to the vanity and ego you’re willing to lose."

"My favorite part of the day with Sunny is our nightly bath, massage, story, song, and silly time ritual."

"I keep a daily gratitude list over email with a bunch of girlfriends. When I feel myself starting to go down the rabbit hole of insanity, I take a minute to review all of the abundance in my life. My friends, my family, my health, my job, my home, my imagination. Puts things in perspective." Confetti System Garland, $130, available at Confetti System.

"When Sunny was six hours old a very annoying nurse with Jennifer Aniston hair took four vials of blood from her foot and she was screaming hysterically and crying and there was nothing I could do. I had just given birth and was delirious with pain myself and immobile but all I wanted to do was punch the nurse in the head and run off into the distance a million miles away from the hospital. Unfortunately I could only watch and deep breathe and stroke my baby’s face and try to tell her telepathically that my job as her mother would be to help her develop a million strong tools to make her into a warrior so that she could always handle any pain that life threw her way and that things would only get better but it sucked. It was my first lesson in really being a mom — total powerlessness mixed with total responsibility." Ryan Roche Overalls, available at Ryan Roche.

"I wish I exercised more. A deep, dark, hard, sweaty, meditative yoga class is like a shot of espresso and a shot of green juice and a shot of whiskey mixed with good sex all in one. You walk in there a total zombie and walk out in bliss. Unfortunately it’s very hard for me to fit it into my schedule. When I was single I practiced Mysore yoga at dawn six days a week. When I can find the time, The Shala in Union Square is truly my home away from home for the past ten years. Its owners, Barbara and Kristin, have managed to create, in the center of all this hellish urban melee, a peaceful, grounded sanctuary that radiates spiritual truth and goodness. They attract a following of bad-ass, ball-busting creative types who truly value serenity, service, calmness and inner strength over being a rigid type-A workaholic asshole. I can't live without it."

"I love saying 'my daughter.' I was so excited right after I had her that I would like just say 'my daughter' to anyone. Like the guy in the coffee shop, while he was ringing me up and I was searching for change I would be like, 'Oh sorry, I’m so tired, my daughter kept me up all night.'"

"I'm definitely the disciplinarian in our house, which is fine. I’m usually the one shaking my finger like, 'Put that down right now Missy, a banana is not a toy!', and my husband's in the corner strumming his guitar in his underwear like 'Sunny Doodles! Let’s sing Bo Diddly one more time!'" Confetti System Garland, $130, available at Confetti System.

"I’m really disorganized. I see all these moms on the subway with Goldfish crackers and seaweed chews in these little Muji Tupperware containers in this perfect little diaper bag and I’m pulling a half-eaten Kind bar out of my Chanel bag with a taxi receipt stuck to it and I’m like 'eat this.'"

"She loves to put peas in her mouth. Not like two peas. Like twenty peas. She just keeps adding them and adding them until she has Tony Soprano cheeks."

"If I had more time, I'd read, write, daydream. Exercise. Hang, meditate. Take long walks. Be lazy. Be productive. Do everything, do nothing. I miss free time. Just wandering around New York mindlessly for hours in and out of bookstores and stuff. And I wish I could hang with my girlfriends and have really long dinners and coffee convos."

"Since becoming a mom, I’ve really paired things down in terms of my style. I try to keep it as simple as possible. Only the basics: good jeans, good tees, a few great sweaters, a few pairs of boots. I have my ring and my bag and that’s it for accessories. Same sort of deal with interiors: Invest in a good mattress, a solid neutral couch, a strong wood kitchen table. Then add little touches here and there with throws, blankets and rugs. I'm rug-obsessed. A few of the ones in my home belonged to my Nana who passed away the month before I got married."

"Sunny’s middle name is Starling, first after the character of Clarice Starling played by Jodie Foster in Silence Of The Lambs — the tender, fearless, and ferocious FBI trainee with violet eyes who single-handedly captured the world’s most menacing serial killer and, in honor of the poem “The Writer” by Richard Wilbur about his ten year old daughter who helps him free a dazed starling that flies into their house one afternoon through their open window. The last line is this: 'It is always a matter, my darling/ Of life or death, as I had forgotten. I wish/ What I wished you before, but harder.'"

"I use coconut oil as a facial moisturizer, and it's also great to cook with. I live for Stila blush, and essential oil with hints of vanilla, black pepper and rose. I am also a huge fan of a loose side braid. It’s a very lazy way to deal with unruly hair that can sometimes sort of pass for high-style."
