Sometimes, all it takes is some shears and a little time to transform a matted, sad shelter dog into the smiling stunner right below the surface. Ahead, 21 rescue dogs who are beyond relieved to be free of all that tangled hair.

"We had Walter listed as a girl, due to so much matting on his belly. By the time we were finished, Walter had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eyes, and as soon as we put him on the ground, he almost looked as if he was skipping with happiness."
