Wait Until You See Shay Mitchell's Insane Sneaker Collection

We like to say that every closet is different in some way. You know, not everyone has a Jeff Koons installation on their roof. Or pieces handed down to them from Stevie Nicks and Winona Ryder. But in the case of someone like Shay Mitchell, occasionally our Spidey sense will give us the heads up that this one is about to be good. And as we climbed the stairs to Mitchell's West Hollywood wardrobe, you can bet they did precisely that.

For those of you who have been with us for a while, we'll put it this way: Mitchell's was an OG Coveteur closet of the highest order. Allow us to spell it out for you: that means a wall-to-wall shoe closet, hat display not unlike one that you'd find in a boutique, an organizational island with fresh flowers, acrylic trays displaying immaculately organized jewelry, and floor-to-ceiling shelving displaying greatest hits from Saint Laurent, Céline, Chanel, and Givenchy. But — plot twist — Mitchell upped the ante with an equally impressive fitness closet housing a few dozen pairs of sneakers. Fitting for the girl who just launched her very own athleisure line, Fit to Wander, no?

Turns out Mitchell, a boxing fanatic, is also the kind of girl who pairs customized gold gloves (bearing a nickname handed down by Cov-alum Ashley Benson) and ruby red boxing shoes with a matching YSL wallet-on-chain situation. While we can't vouch for her actual attire in the ring, let's just say we approved. We also got to talking everything from Mitchell's go-to grub choices upon touching down in her (and our) home and native land (girl got real specific, beyond the cliché ketchup chips): Timbits, Bitondo's pizza, and boneless chicken roti from Island Foods, to always stashing dandelion seeds and hunting down some vintage handbags. A girl after our own heart — pretty sure that beats flowers any time.

“I think [my style] is always changing. It’s kind of eclectic, I’ll go from bohemian, to hipster chic, to rocker or athletic, you know, it’s always changing. I can’t pinpoint one look that I have, it honestly depends on how I wake up in the morning, what the weather is outside, what I’m doing for the day. I’ll wear a summer dress and some really cute flats and do my makeup a little girlier and maybe do a flower in my hair or something, but then there’s other days when I just want to wear all black: leather pants, black boots, black tank top, black leather jacket, and I go for little bit more of a grunge look. In one word, it’s ever-changing.”

“My clothing line with Kohl's, Fit to Wander, is something that I’m really excited for. I’m always thinking about the next thing."

“I’ve always been a big fan of Kohl’s, when I came out to the States and stuff. Clearly we didn’t have it in Canada. Coming out here was always so great because I could get affordable workout gear and nightgowns or whatever it was, but I never really found pieces that I could wear from workout to after work, or even just clothes that I could wear when I wasn’t working out.”

"The jogger pants [from my line] are so cozy, the fabric that we chose is super soft. Again, you can take it into night by throwing on a really simple heel or just doing it with, like, sneakers or even flip-flops. The sports bra, obviously, it’s just like a really good fit. I feel like there’s enough support but not too much support and they have a cool crisscross design in the back.”

“The black tights [are my favorite from the Fit to Wander collection] because I wear them all the time, especially when traveling. I want to still look cute when I’m at the airport and on the airplane, but I don’t necessarily want to be uncomfortable, so I have a pair of black tights in my line that, again, you can fold up if you’ve had a big meal, or if you want to go to the gym you can wear it with a cute sports bra because it’s only showing a smaller section of your stomach."

“[My first vintage splurge] was probably my slingback Christian Louboutin shoes. I was so excited when I got them and I was so upset when I wore them for one night and the whole bottom was ruined. Then I found out that you can actually get the soles re-done, so that it’s rubber and it’s a little bit easier on them so they don’t get ruined. But that was my first big purchase. I was like, 'Ahh, I have a pair of Louboutin shoes and I love them!’”

“I’m a huge fan of bags, so I love getting them, but I also have now really fallen in love with finding vintage bags. Whether they're designer or not, I just like something that you can’t go into a store and get."

"As far as getting ready, I use a combination of the Jouer Tinted Moisturizer and Tarte Tinted Moisturizer. I blend both of them and I just try to use that. Whenever I’m not on set, I don’t like to wear a lot of makeup because I’m wearing makeup everyday. A tinted moisturizer with SPF is definitely key — and then mascara. I love CoverGirl’s Lashblast mascara, I’ve used that almost my entire life."

“I like to drink a cup of aloe vera juice every night. I also switch back between apple cider vinegar. Aloe Vera has so many great benefits, but for digestion, I just feel like it’s really great. I’m also obsessed with green tea. I’m constantly on set, so I try and swap out [coffee for tea]. I do drink coffee — iced coffee from Coffee Bean — but I try to have more green tea in my day than I do coffee."

“On Instagram, I love Humans of New York. I just think that was the smartest thing. I love reading their stories, I just love that page. The Fat Jew is a great one. I follow so many different travel ones on Instagram, just because I’m like, okay there’s a new hotel that I haven’t checked out. I just have fun scrolling and seeing what my friends are getting up to, where they’re traveling to. I think the majority of Instagram for me is travel.”

"I just think it’s so much more special when you’re going vintage shopping or you’re traveling somewhere far. Like in Morocco, I did a lot of shopping and I found some really cool purses that you can’t get anywhere else — and I love that. I just love pieces that have a story behind them, so not only am I wearing it but then I can kind of share where I was when I got it. It’s a little bit more interesting than just getting it at the store.”

“I actually got these in Bali, Indonesia. It was funny because one of them I had gotten from a store here, and I was like, this is so cool...and obviously a lot more expensive than when I found it in Bali. When we went to Indonesia I was looking, and I found these. They’re so colorful and perfect just to wear with just a simple black dress or a one-color look.”

"As a wrap gift, all of [the cast] got a wine bottle with the poster of that year, I think it might’ve been either season 1 or season 2. It was so cute and everybody was like, ‘This is great, let’s drink it!’ I was like ‘Are you kidding?! It’s never going to be opened, ever. It’s going to be bad tasting wine in like, 60 years.’”

“There’s an app called NextIssue which allows you to get subscriptions to over 150 magazines for a monthly fee. That has been my favorite [when I travel], because I don’t have to lug around ten different magazines with me anymore, it’s just all on my iPad. It is so good and easy. Every single month it refreshes all your magazines. You just choose which ones you want get on a monthly basis, but I mean, one magazine is like eight bucks so the fact that you can get over 100 of them for about fourteen dollars is kind of amazing. I should definitely work for this company, because I’ve definitely told so many people!”

"Another thing I do [when I travel] is carry dandelion tea in packets. As much as you’re drinking water, you also get a little bit bloated, so this just kind of helps lose the water retention. And lip balm and hand cream, because again, you are so dehydrated up in the air. I always pack snacks with me: protein bars, almonds or a bag of chips...let’s be honest.”

"I’m pretty big on brightly colored lipsticks. I have too many to count, that’s kind of my summer look here. I feel like it’s really all you need. Just a little bit of mascara, some tinted moisturizer with SPF, and some lipstick.”

“For night, it’s so fun when you do the sweatpant look. I have one sweatpant in my line. It comes in many different colors, but I love doing that with just a simple heel and white tank. You really can wear that out at night, and again, just throwing a leather jacket on top is a really cute look.”

“[My favorite workout], is boxing. I can’t get enough of it, I love it. You see progress every single time you go in, and that for me is encouraging and makes me want to continue to go back. You can feel yourself getting stronger and I just think that’s such a great thing. A lot of people find with yoga you get more flexible; with boxing, it’s just different kinds of strengths that keep getting worked on. It’s such a great cardio workout. It’s a great sweat and it’s just good all around. Boxing for me is definitely my number one.”

“For day, it’s easy with sneakers now, all the different colors are so fun. I always love if I’m doing a black and white ensemble to have a pop of a sneaker and then with that, I’ll wear a leather jacket. I'll go to movies and I’m always in tights and a comfortable shirt then throw on a leather jacket in case you get cold and some really cute sneakers.”

“My favorite person in L.A. for skin, I call her my skin doctor, is Shani Darden. She works with Rosie [Huntington-Whiteley] and Jessica Alba and a bunch of different people, but I do my facials with her and she has her own product out and it is really amazing, it’s kind of like a retinol cream. You put it on every night. I’m obsessed with her as a person. It was hard, going from the cold to the hot weather here. With the humidity, it’s hard to keep your skin consistent, so I try and stick to the same products."

"I have a book I wrote with my friend Michaela, that’s coming out in October. We’re doing a book tour, so I’m really excited. It’s something that I’ve never done. I’m 28 years old and I wanted to create something that was for my age demo and the demographic that I’m in, so it’s a little bit more risky than Pretty Little Liars. I want people to be over the age of 18 before they read it. I’ve always been an avid reader and I wanted a book that me and my friends would enjoy, something that wasn’t too young and something that wasn’t about an older women who’s been divorced five times."

"[I wanted the book to be] something that kind of suited where I was at this moment, so it’s loosely based on my life, Michaela’s life, and a couple people that we know — plus a lot of just fun random stuff. It’s really great and I’m excited for it to come out."

“When I come home to Toronto, I have a set thing. Whoever is picking me up usually shows up with Timbits and Tim Hortons, a Double Double coffee. Then, Island Foods is my favorite thing. It’s my first meal when I come to Toronto and when I leave Toronto. I get a boneless chicken roti with extra sauce and extra hot sauce. That is my jam. I’ve actually had a friend of mine send it to me frozen, overnighted. I got it the next day and it was heaven. Probably the most expensive roti I’ve ever had, but it was delicious. Toronto just has so many amazing restaurants, I’m so excited to come back there.”
