Doris Fisher, co-founder of The Gap

Net Worth: $2.3 Billion

How She Got To Where She Is: Along with her late husband Donald, Doris Fisher founded the iconic clothing company in 1969 when he was unable to find jeans that fit well. With a singular shop on San Francisco's Ocean Avenue selling every size of Levi Strauss pants, as well as tapes and records, expansion was quick — the company sold $2 million of goods within their first year of business — and the rest was casual-chic history.

Notable Accomplishments: Over the past 43 years in business, the iconic American company has partnered with Stella McCartney and Pierre Hardy, created (our much-loved) Piperlime and Athleta brands, and participated in Product Red campaigns that contributed millions of dollars to the Global Fund, which is outside the serious philanthropy work the Fishers have done themselves.

And That's Not All... Doris and Donald amassed such a large collection of contemporary art that they almost built a museum rivaling the size of SFMOMA in order to house it. Many of the pieces, from iconic artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, have been housed at Gap HQ. (Talk about office decor!)

Key To Success: Speak your mind. The store never would have been called "The Gap" if Doris hadn't pointed out the generational shift in the neighborhood, and that it should be reflected in the brand's monicker. We're guessing those '90s sweatshirts wouldn't have been quite so iconic had they been emblazoned with the original name: "Pants and Discs."
