On Tuesday morning, my almost-mother-in-law Marlena repacked her things, hopped in the car with her daughter Ana and made her way across the island back towards home. With traffic lights out everywhere, it was slow going, but the two chatted light-heartedly as they inched their way towards the Dongan Hills neighborhood, nestled between South Beach and Midland. Yet, by the time the car was a few blocks away, both passengers were in tears.
