Coming Together

By Friday I had power back and the Red Cross was out in full force, making its way up and down the streets that were clear enough for vehicles, calling out to people over a bullhorn to let them know there were hot meals and blankets available. Residents lined up to collect aid when they opened doors. Red Cross had been there all along, as had FEMA, the National Guard and numerous other local charities like the Carl V. Bini Memorial Foundation — which enlisted hundreds of volunteers to help clean up the worst affected areas. Though there had been some grumbling about the length of time it took for the recovery to get into full swing, the truth is that the response from all parties had been nothing short of stunning.
