I spent that night back in my home, forbidden from opening the refrigerator to snack (lest I allow the cold to escape), reading my Nook by the light of a headlamp, and being soothed to sleep by the sound of a neighbor’s sputtering generator. The next day, with Ana’s mother in Queens, where power and Internet service were reliable enough to register with FEMA, we were free to worry about other things — namely, friends and family that we still had not heard from in the aftermath of the storm.
