My future mother-in-law lived in "Zone A," an area under mandatory evacuation. Reluctantly, she left her ground-floor apartment behind Sunday, packed an overnight bag, and stayed with my fiancée in our home well above sea level. Other than the loss of power, Sandy seemed to pass through my neighborhood with little incident. A tree branch crushed a neighbor’s shed and a few small side streets were blocked by fallen debris, but the perception from within my apartment was that, for all its howling winds, the Frankenstorm was relatively uneventful.
