Trend We Heart: Matchy-Matchy Nails & Lips

As much as we love our crazy nail colors, there's something so inarguably chic about ladylike colors for lips and tips. The concept of matching your nails to your lip color used to be ubiquitous back in the day, but has been looked down on as being stuffy or old-fashioned in recent years. You can thank the resurgence of a combination of fashion-forward lip colors, a Mad Men-sparked infatuation with retro beauty, and our insatiable appetite for all things sophisticated this season.
"I love the quaint notion of a matching manicure, pedicure, and lips," says nail guru Nonie Creme. "It's perfect with the hot fashion color palettes this season — this is not your granny’s matchy-matchy," she says. "Anything goes with this look, and you can play off the amazing accessories this season has to offer. I love a gorgeous salmon pink on nails, toes, and lips to clash in the most perfect way with a neon green belt or handbag."
In fact, going twinsies on your nails and lips is so big for spring that many key brands are launching new products based on the trend. Next month, Butter London will launch a collection of lip glosses, their very first non-nail products, that match five of their most popular polishes — Primrose Hill Picnic, Snog, Trout Pout, Yummy Mummy, and Teddy Girl. And, MAC senior artist Keri Blair, who keyed nail looks for MAC backstage at the fall '12 shows, let slip that "some of [MAC's] most-beloved lip colors will soon be available in polish form. The season has just begun, but already I know that women will be clamoring for some of our best known lip colors to don on their nails." They've definitely got our attention!
With that in mind, we picked some of our favorite examples from the spring runways of how you can interpret the trend. There's the usual suspects of reds and pinks, but quite a few unique hues to play with, too.
Check them out, then tell us if this is a trend you'd try, or if you think it's too prim and proper.
