12 hats to make summertime the tops. By Piera Gelardi & Christene Barberich
We here at Refinery29 we like a nice chapeau. But we will say (not to toot our own horn), we were donning cloches, panamas, and bowlers long before they were an L-train staple. But now that it's pushing 90 degrees outside, lightweight hats aren't just a finishing piece but a necessary shield from the blazing sun.
Because we are also big lovers of fashion matched with function, we've hunted down 12 hats that look smart (ie: they don't tip the trendy scale), feel good (they're made of breathable materials like cotton and straw), and are gentle on the Amex (some ring in under $10). Even if you're not a hat person, one of these glamorous lids—including Topshop's porkpie, Karen Walker's straw wide-brim, and Urban Outfitters cotton Cadet cap—should keep you cool in more ways than one.

Topshop Straw Boater Hat, about $40, available at Topshop.

Eugenia Kim Max Hat, $265, available at Zoe.
Asli Filinta Mesh Hat with Feathers, $285, available at Pixie Market.

Lola Petit Dulce Hat, $155, available at Zoe.
Anthropologie Sardou Fedora, $42, available at Anthropologie.

Urban Outfitters Washed Denim Cadet Hat, $9.99, available at Urban Outfitters.
A.P.C. Sailor's Cap, $56, available at A.P.C..
