Clothes to Spare? Best Places to Sell/Donate/Exchange Your Goods

With the new year upon us, we're suddenly feeling inspired to clean out our closet and make way for all that 2009 has to offer. And there's nothing better than killing two birds with one stone by donating those gently used clothes of yesteryear to a good cause, or selling them and making a little something for our own pockets. But finding the right place to lug that bag full of your old things can be tricky—so without further ado, here's a list of our favorite vintage/consignment/thrift shops around town:
Exchanges:
The Dressing Room
An adorable hybrid contemporary/vintage boutique (complete with casual cocktail bar) that selectively buys, sells, and trades clothing and accessories.
Buffalo Exchange
With two franchises and thirty-four stores around the country, this place champions bulk clothing and accessory recycling.
Beacon's Closet
Needless to say, a beacon for clotheshorse hipsters near and far.
Consignment:
Ina Consignment Shop
Ina boasts a very high turnover and some of the choiciest locations in Manhattan.
Fisch For the Hip
An upscale consignment shop with a carefully curated selection of designer pieces.
Michael's Consignment Shop
A high-end shop that looks at pieces no more than two years old—unless they're Chanel, Hermes, or Pucci (naturally).
Designer Resale
This place specializes in men's and women's designer clothes and accessories and has called the Upper East Side home for an impressive seventeen years.
Thrift:
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Thrift Shop
For the altruistic—this UES mainstay accepts high quality vintage and designer pieces and sales benefit patient care, research, and education programs.
Arthritis Thrift Shop
Another UES staple; clothing, jewelry, and bric-a-brac are sold to benefit the Arthritis Foundation.
Angel Street Thrift Shop
Stocking a mix of used, new, and unusual pieces, Angel Street benefits people affected by mental illness, HIV, AIDS, and substance abuse.
Housing Works Thrift Shop
With seven locations in the city, Housing Works takes in men's and women's vintage and designer pieces, jewelry, accessories, etc. Proceeds benefit men, women, and children living with HIV and AIDS in New York.
Vintage:
Olives Very Vintage
These guys make life easy. Just email them descriptions/photos of your pieces—they promise to get back to you ASAP.
Hooti Couture
A classic for buying and selling all things vintage.
New York Vintage
Call or email them for an appointment to have your most covetable goods appraised.
Family Jewels Vintage Clothing
Buying and selling vintage and antique clothing for over twenty years!
