How To Perfect SoCal Fall Style

How do you know when it's fall in Southern California? Well, you tend to throw an extra flannel or light jacket in the back of your car in case you're out late and...well...that's about it. Oh, wait, we forgot one thing — it's finally cool enough to trade in your flats, heels, and summer-style kicks for a few pairs of buttery, leathery, honest-to-goodness boots. As a matter of fact, except for them, it can kind of be hard to make that distinction between our seasonal style.
Well, to help you out in that department, we've enlisted Ms. Shea Marie — the blogger, stylist, and TV host raised outside of San Diego and now holding it down — big time — right here in West Hollywood. If there's anyone out there who can slip on her Clarks boots, drive out to the desert, and teach you how to make fall look like fall, it's this 100% Cali girl. Enjoy, kiddos!

"My summer was incredible — maybe the best of my life. I was so lucky to have the opportunity to go all over the world: Paris, Milan, Greece, Brazil, and the Bahamas. As sad as I am to say good-bye to summer, I’m equally as excited for my favorite season in fashion. Fall has so much more to offer in fashion. Fall, to me, means deep earthy hues, leather jackets, brimmed hats, lightweight sweaters, funky metal jewels, and — of course — boots!

Anyway, this is me in West Hollywood, filling up before our road trip. About a two-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles are miles and miles of open desert. From Palm Springs to Joshua Tree, Death Valley, and Las Vegas, the options are endless, and I love them all. I may look all peace and love here, but the weather forecast says rain ahead, so I’m actually a little nervous about flash flooding."

"Here we are on the road on the way to Joshua Tree. One of the best parts of the drive to the desert is the San Gorgonio pass, where the windmills line the entire valley."

"Now, maybe I look a little underdressed here, but I'm actually pretty hot. Since we don’t really have to start buying 'fall' clothes in Southern California (big sweaters, coats, etc.) until November, it’s absolutely all about accessorizing your summer outfits to make them 'look and feel' right for fall. My favorite tricks are ankle boots, hats, and lots of bangles. Honestly, there's not much better than a long, black maxi paired with ankle boots!"

"Pretty sure the sky looks amazing here because quick storms were traveling through the desert."

"One of my other favorite looks — minidress paired with ankle boots and a hat. As I said, it can stay quite warm until mid-November around here, so one of my favorite ways to make my style fit the season without wearing too many layers is pairing a dress with ankle booties and a good hat. White has been a trend all year long, and I expect white-on-white outfits with black accessories to continue right into fall."

"Now we're in Pioneertown in Joshua Tree. Situated way out in the desert, up a long, winding road, it looks like an old Western-movie set. You really have to see it to believe it...P.S., how about the buckles on these moto-style boots?"

"The welcome 'sign' in Pioneertown. After driving down multiple dirt roads, my white Mercedes had, at this point, turned brown. I grew up in the countryside of San Diego, so sprawling ranches — like this pretends to be — are like home to me. This whole area is one of my favorite weekend, close-getaway spots."

"Road trip! Gotta love Ray-Bans if you’re a California girl. I mean they're essential, since, in Los Angeles, we dress casual-cool. Great boots, the perfect jean, and a button-up is a great day-to-day look."

"Everything looks like this in Pioneertown. It's funny, when I grew up [in] that country town — Valley Center — we didn’t even have one clothing store or grocery store. My idea that I might work in the fashion world one day was so far out, people thought I was crazy!"

"I’m always a big fan of plaid-print flannels — it’s so 90’s (think Clueless). Expect to see a lot of other '90s things this fall like denim-on-denim. I'm so happy that it’s finally socially acceptable to wear full-denim outfits pretty much anywhere — crop tops, high-waisted pants, boxy coats, lace, and big, long boots like these."I'm so happy that it’s finally socially acceptable to wear full-denim outfits pretty much anywhere — crop tops, high-waisted pants, boxy coats, lace, and big, long boots like these."

"I'm loving round sunglasses at the moment."

"Lace is always a fall staple. Turn it into a 2013 trend by making it a crop top like I do here. For fall, I’d pair it with high-waisted jeans, some really lush, leather boots, and a flannel tied around my waist for those cool nights."

"I found an amazing backdrop for a photo shoot — the middle of the infamous Route 66! What you can’t see is the car coming up behind me, and me rushing off the road like a crazy person one second later. Oh, the things bloggers will do for pictures!"

"I love when boots combine smooth leather and suede. It makes these babies one of my favorite pairs! You know, with our seasons, a lot of our wardrobe we can wear all year round! I always say to invest in timeless pieces that you can transfer from one season to the next, and save your money for a great leather jacket and good pair of boots."
