The Sex And The City Trends We Never Thought Would Make A Comeback

We’ll always love Sex and the City for its memorable life lessons, its rosy — though oftentimes inaccurate — portrayal of being single in Manhattan, and, of course, Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic style moments. Although some of her outfit choices, like tutus and flower pins, may seem better suited for HBO reruns than real life, this '00s protagonist is actually proving herself to be an impressive predictor of today's trends. She’s already heralded the return of the bucket hat, the itsy-bitsy crop top, bandannas, and more of our favorite summer go-tos, but her latest comeback look might be the most unexpected. According to WWD, Bradshaw’s beloved Dior saddlebags and “J’Adore Dior” tees are currently experiencing a massive resurgence and are selling out at boutiques across the country. Designed by John Galliano, the collection — which includes handbags, rhinestone-encrusted jewelry, and logo clothing — first gained popularity around 2000. They left the scene after becoming oversaturated in pop culture (Paris Hilton wore hers everywhere), and perhaps as a backlash against Galliano’s anti-Semitic remarks in 2011.

But within the past few years, interest has spiked again. According to Christos Garkinos, co-owner of Decades in Los Angeles, sales of secondhand Dior has increased 30% to 50%. What's more, online resellers like The Real Real report that Bradshaw’s signature “J’Adore Dior” tee is currently fetching its original price of $195. Just don’t assume this resurgence is necessarily a symbol of Galliano’s return to fashion. As branding consultant Jenné Lombardo explained, “People will want to overintellectualize it. I really think it’s more reactionary and a response to wanting something that is colorful and animated, as opposed to, ‘I want to champion this guy’s comeback.’” Bags might be one thing, but Bradshaw's Galliano-designed newspaper dress is another.
