If you see me anytime between March and October, chances are I'll be wearing my beloved stonewashed denim motorcycle jacket, which I got from The Gap. Like Spider Man and his trusty spidey suit, or Edie Sedgwick and her iconic leopard coat, the jacket has become part of my persona, and, well, my life just wouldn’t be the same without it.
Full disclosure: I used to have a serious jacket addiction. Leather bombers, silk blazers, plastic raincoats — you name it, I bought it. I had a jacket for every outfit and for every occasion, but then this denim beauty came into my life and I’ve been a changed woman ever since. It’s almost as if the Gap gods smiled down on me one day and decided to bequeath the denim jacket of my adolescent girl dreams. Two years and about a hundred shopping trips later, it still serves as my go-to uniform for almost every occasion.

There’s just something about its perfect stonewashed shading and unconventional design that makes any outfit look better, whether it’s a T-shirt or a cocktail dress. Zipped up or down, it fits me like a second skin. It has the ability to make any dressy outfit more casual and any casual outfit more chic. I’ve worn it over a swimsuit in Portugal, a formal dress in Charleston, and dozens of other outfits and as many places, in between. Needless to say, the jacket and I have a very deep connection, and all of this is thanks to my style soul mate and dear friend, Jackie.
She owned the jacket long before I did, and not only did she let me borrow it for a weekend trip, she drove me to multiple Gap locations in order to find the jacket in my size so I wouldn't be so tempted to steal hers forever. (Smart move, Jax.) To this day, we still refer to it as "THE jacket" and often end up wearing it on the same nights, but that’s fine with us. The jacket trumps the “don’t match your friend” rule because it’s just. that. awesome.
Now, don’t get me wrong — I still buy new jackets from time to time and wear them on occasion, but nothing supplements my wardrobe and makes me quite as happy as my beloved denim motorcycle jacket. It gives me the confidence that I need to go outside and take on the world each day. Or, at the very least, it helps me look pretty good while I try.
And really, what more could a girl ask for?
