A Billyburg Ride With The Runway Hippie

In just the title of her ever-so-popular blog, Sonia Evers has summed up her style (and personality) in two simple words: Runway Hippie. After all, she's a sartorial free spirit who plays with sizes and shapes, making her preppie or Fashion Week-worthy pieces look anything but straightlaced. Moreover, she spends her days peacefully blogging, styling, and gamboling around her adopted Williamsburg, while her coverage of fashion, beauty, and NYC jaunts is particularly sharp. All in all, she's two distinct flavors that taste great together.
Now, on a surprisingly warm winter day (we've had so few of those), we biked and hoofed it around Billyburg with the Timberland-clad blogger. Between the style tips, trips to local hidden gems, and everything else, there was so much peace and love that sunny afternoon, we were feeling a little like hippies ourselves.

Hey, Sonia, we're taking a little trek around your neighborhood. Why don't you tell the people where we're kicking around today?
"We're hanging in my adoptive home of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Honestly, I wouldn't trade it for any other neighborhood in the five boroughs."

Okay, fair enough. But, what do you like about a walk in W'burg?
"I mean, any walk through my neighborhood sort of reaffirms my love and appreciation for where I live. But, for me, it's even better when I'm cruising around on my apple-green bicycle on a most beautiful day like this."

And, what are you showing us?
"Oh, two of my local favorites: the flower shop Rose Red & Lavender and the bike shop NYC Bikes. I love both of these places because beautiful, fresh flowers are a weekly must in my apartment, and I'm no handyman, so I need a go-to spot to service my bike year-round. Well, it's my own bike's home away from home. I love this place because they always let me use their air pump, and they have the best variety of bikes to choose from (like my apple-green baby!)."

Love the boots, by the way.
"Any shoe that has a reasonable heel while still being comfortable gets an A+ in my book. It also makes them ideal for walking around the city! The fact that they're knee-high just makes them that much more fun to style and play around with."

Now, your outfit isn't exactly Tour de France style, but it works for cycling.
"Yeah, with my sweetest miniskirt, slouchiest sweater, and those knee-highs, this outfit is great for riding, because it's just the right amount of warm. Plus, it's comfortable and looks good no matter what you're doing (like riding a bike!). Feels very Cher Horowitz to me."

While we're on the subject of style, how would you describe yours?
"I've never had a specific style; I'm more of the if-I-like-it-I'll-wear-it kind of girl. One day you might find me dressed like Steve Urkel, while other days, I'll pull out all the glamour stops and wear an evening gown just because I feel like it."

So, what would you say about this look then?
"It's very much an everyday outfit for me — flexibility and comfort being the key components. I would wear it pretty much everywhere, from the grocery store to the bowling alley to taking my dog for a walk in the park. The best part is that it can easily go from all those daytime adventures to late-night break dancing!"

And, tell us about those chukkas.
"What first caught my eye with these guys was their color — how amazing is that rusty red?! — but I also fell in love with their shape. I like a shoe, preferably in boot form, that has a modest heel and enough breathing room. Plus, they hit a certain sweet spot between late-winter and early-spring transitional dressing. What can I say, I'm a sucker for ankle boots."

Oh, by the way, thanks for taking us to Red Rose & Lavender. It's quite the hidden gem.
"Totally. The people here are super-friendly, and the backyard area is full of hidden goodies like plastic pink flamingos and ceramic chickens. Oh, the flowers and plants are pretty awesome, too."

Finally, other than reaffirming your love for the 'burg, what do you get out of little rides like this?
"Whenever I'm in a creative slump, I take a walk or a bike ride. It's all about getting a change of scenery, getting my blood flowing, and opening my eyes to everything around me. Jaunts like these almost always get the inspiration flowing, and if that doesn't work then at least I'm getting fresh air. Hah!"
