It’s not unlikely you’ve walked past this unremarkable exterior a dozen or more times without having once taken note of its dimly lit interior. But once inside, you’ll wonder how it is you could have ever missed it. Mother and daughter proprietors Dane, for whom the store is named, and Robin Fonseca, a former buyer at Destination and a gifted collector, opened the shop in late 2004 in a split space the pair shares with a Japanese housewares purveyor. And they’ve taken great care to create a shopping venue that feels as homey as it is packed with finds.

Amid a mixed bag of flea-market paintings, honey-colored cabinets, and antique dress-forms are the real treasures: an exquisitely well-edited selection of women’s clothing, embellished vintage-inspired handbags, and other unusual accessories. Among these items are Brett Borne’s reversible summer dresses crafted from Japanese men’s shirt fabrics, Lloyd Maish’s elegantly structured leather travel bags, or British duo Takamaka’s flashy snakeskin aviator glasses. Dane and Robin are constantly sourcing new, under-the-radar designers and regularly add new acquisitions to the shelves, such as Izuhoro’s delicate handwoven, natural scarves. The duo have also amassed a blinding selection of designer and vintage jewelry, including Robin’s own line of gold and silver rings designed from half-completed molds that she found some 20 years ago in an abandoned jewelry store on Canal Street.
