As you add foam, be sure to massage it in to avoid tangles until your whole noggin is saturated. Be careful applying around the face and ears, though — darker shades will leave stains on the skin, which is why it's important to apply cream to those areas before you color to protect the skin. Once you've applied your color, go around with a damp paper towel and gently wipe off any smudges.
