The Non-Basic Way To Wear Ruffles (That You Can Recreate With Your Own Clothes)

Halfway through Fashion Week we can already tell you a few of the trends that are going to be huge — scooped up instantly by fast-fashion brands and stocked on shelves before spring '15 even rolls around. And, one such example is ruffles.

But, the thing is, a trend as ladylike as this can be a bit of an acquired taste. When used in excess they can seem precious; when too arbitrary they seem basic. Rebecca Taylor's new offerings are neither.

One of our favorite ways to wear a statement ruffle comes by way of the New York designer's drop waist, mermaid-like, hemline styling trick. As a source for all things feminine and cool, Taylor showed a few examples on the runway yesterday alongside a collection of gorgeous mixed pastels, bejeweled sleeves, and a feline print that cat ladies will love. It's kind of like the slightly frillier version of the slip-dress-peeking trend that was huge last spring.

This time, Taylor paired her cascading and knife-pleat ruffles with straight-lined dresses, sweater dresses, and under long, form-fitting blazers. Essentially, it instantly provides a bit of contrast that allows the feminine detail to feel fresh and unexpected. And, most importantly, it never overshadows the femme herself who's wearing it.
