1 Girl, 4 Looks: An Up-And-Coming Bay Blogger Shows Off Her Posh Style

Don't get us wrong — we love our crop of established local bloggers here in S.F. We constantly find ourselves hunched over our computers, ogling their latest jaunts in fashion and city living. But, we do have to say, there's something so refreshing about unearthing new sites, too. Such is the case with East Bay blogging babe Olga Montserrat of 12:04. This gal is not just a serious sartorial inspiration, but she's a majorly career-minded chick. Heck, Forbes even dubbed her site one of the "20 Best Fashion Blogs For Professional Women." The pretty lady somehow finds time to get her blog on in between holding down a covetable art-director position, designing graphics for the Man Repeller, and hanging out with her fiancé.
To find out more about this on-the-rise gal, we headed to Montserrat's space to peep her 9-to-5 and after-hours style, as well as take a walking tour of her hood. Click through to discover your newest blogger crush, right around the bend!

Tell us a little bit about what you do.
"I have been an art director for a long time. In a nutshell, I'm responsible for the visuals that represent brands like eBay, the San Francisco Giants, Cost Plus World Market, and many others. I specialize in interactive media, which means I design and create websites, but I also get to work on photo shoots, print, outdoor billboards, and TV. It's exciting to see my work every now and then in the real world."

What's the biggest challenge you face with 9-to-5 style?
"I love wearing sky-high heels, but I live in the East Bay and commute into San Francisco. On top of that, I have another mile before I get to work. I'd be a crazy person if I didn't have flats or sneakers with me for the commute. It's a challenge not looking like a bag lady juggling my work laptop, my purse, my lunch, and my heels."

You have such a cool job! Does your office style differ from your personal?
"Not at all! My style at work and my style at home are both personal and authentic to me. I work in an industry that nurtures creativity and encourages a point of view, so my job in advertising is pretty non-traditional. The office atmosphere is notoriously casual and relaxed, so 'business casual' or corporate attire really never comes into play in my life."

Tell us more about your blog. What inspired you to start it?
"I started 12:04 because I loved fashion and was looking for a place to document it. It's a lookbook for my personal taste, featuring my personal style, shopping wish lists, and street-style muses, all with a design slant. It's my daily ritual now, a design practice, and a true passion."

Why is it called 12:04?
"It's shorthand for my birthday, December 4. I liked the idea of having my blog be about everything I love about fashion — from my personal style to some inspirational street style viewed through an art-director's eyes. I liked the idea of giving 12:04 a more abstract name and letting the aesthetic, photos, and editing speak for me."

White hot! The adorable blogger wears an ASOS top and bracelet, Zara shorts, Alexander Wang shoes, Karen Walker sunglasses, Kate Spade bag, Eddie Borgo earrings, and a Madewell bracelet.

It's so cool you've worked with the Man Repeller! Would you consider yourself to be a man repeller, sartorially speaking?
"I love the entire concept of man repelling. Leandra's personality and ability to enjoy fashion without the pretentiousness is so refreshing. To me, man repelling just means that you have a clear point of view in what you like and don't like to wear. If men like it, great. If they don't, who cares! Personal style is just that, personal."

If your style were a song, what would it be?
"This is a really tough question! I think I'd be the entire Night Ripper album from Girl Talk. My style is so diverse and inspired by so many things that Girl Talk's skillful mix music is the perfect cacophony to infuse all the styles in my style."

Who are a few of your favorite designers and brands?
"I love a lot of brands but my go-to favorites are Alexander Wang because of his urban, cool aesthetic, Kenzo for youthful prints and shapes, Equipment and Carven because I am obsessed with collars, J.Crew for the emphasis on classics and its kick-ass Collection pieces, and finally Everlane for its mission to make well-made pieces without the designer mark-up. Everlane is great because they represent one of my core beliefs that being fashionable and chic doesn't mean you have to be frivolous or rich by default."

What is one item you could never live without?
"Three words: Karen Walker sunglasses. I own four pairs and my personal collection has no signs of slowing down. Sunglasses are the easiest way to change up a look and I love the youthful colors and shapes. Karen Walker just gets it. She really knows how to frame a face."

What's your go-to weekend outfit?
"I love dressing up during the week, so weekends are my time to indulge in some more casual California-style attire: shorts, mini dresses, flats, leggings, and skinny jeans."

If we were to look in closet right now — what are some the coolest pieces we'd find?
"Maybe it's an occupational hazard of working with such recognizable brands on a daily basis, but I think the coolest pieces in my closet are not necessarily the most expensive or the most recognizable, they all are special because they mean something to me. Some of those 'cool' items range from a perfectly fitted Target shirt that rivals other designer pieces, a pair of itty-bitty diamond rings that were gifted from my mom, or a pair of Moschino boots that have been to the repair shop over 10 times and remind me of how hard I worked to save up for them.

I don't mean to wax poetic about fashion, it's just that I believe that fashion is more important than the materialistic dismissal it sometimes gets. That's why that great Sofia Coppola quote is centerpiece of my About page: 'You’re considered superficial and silly if you’re interested in fashion, but I think you can be substantial and still be interested in frivolity.'"

What do you love most about living in the East Bay?
"I love how quiet it is. There's a more relaxed attitude that really makes going home peaceful. I moved to the East Bay because I fell in love with the Bay Area when I was at school at UC Berkeley. I experienced San Francisco, got it out of my system, and moved back to the East Bay. I had enough of the constant sirens, the cramped, expensive living spaces, and the hills!"

What are your favorite East Bay haunts?
"I love visiting College Avenue and 4th Street in Berkeley. It's a great place to just people watch and enjoy an afternoon with delicious food and shopping. I love the El Cerrito Rialto Cinema, one of the few places in the East Bay you can go watch a movie, order a pizza, and a bottle of wine."

How would you describe your personal style?
"Minimal, modern, and feminine. I make a living editing brand aesthetics to match a company's consumer-facing personality and style, so I apply the same discipline to my personal style. I stray away from proportions and trends that don't work for my body, never the other way around. I'm a big advocate for people discarding the vanity sizing and embracing pieces that are tailored and have proportions complementary to their bodies. I'm constantly refining my personal style, but at the root it's based on classic shapes and a monochrome palette."

When you're not working or blogging, what can we find you doing?
"When I'm not working, I'm blogging! So, when I'm not blogging, I'm spending time at home or visiting friends and family. They are my biggest fans and keep me grounded. I'm very blessed to have wonderful people around me and being around them makes me happy."
