Object Lesson: Rain Check
Uncovering the layers of Number (N)ine's unrestricted raincoat. By Loryn Hatch

With a look that's virtually drenched in nostalgia, weightless like a wandering spirit, and fresh with fearlessness, Number (N)ine's spring/summer collection plays a powerful game of "what ifs." Breezing into stores this Saturday, Takahiro Miyashita's vision of Kurt Cobain today, titled "About a Boy if he was still alive," fuses the natural and rugged glamour of rock and country in an extensive assortment of detailed separates that can be dutifully toned down or decked out. Our pick this season stands strong on its own: A hefty double-layer raincoat with the kind of unrestricted style and practicality that promises to transform any guy's wardrobe in one slick swoop.
Casting a relaxed but streamlined silhouette, this hazy-brown raincoat has the brilliant effortlessness and sensibility of a timeless blazer. Made from cotton and silk-screened with a smart-looking windowpane plaid, the coat boasts extra panels sewn into the shoulders that act almost as a vest in the front and extend down the back into free-flowing tails. The smooth, silk lining pays homage to Miyashita's inspiration with a curvy musical note print. Sounds just about perfect, right? Well, there's one more thing you should know…this springtime staple might put a dent in your savings. But hey, you could always sacrifice that long-awaited tax return. Rest-assured though—it's worth it.
The Double-Layer Raincoat ($2,350) will be available (along with the rest of the spring collection) January 20, 2007. Number (N)ine, 431 Washington Street, New York; 212-431-8699.
