Before Sunrise
Lizzie Fortunato crafts a past-perfect purse to last a lifetime. By Johnathan Lawhorne
Whether it's vintage, thrift, or plain ol' hand-me-downs, we all seem to want our fashion to pack a little past-perfect significance. Lucky for us, the Fortunato sisters (and twins) Elizabeth and Kathryn—best known lately for their carefully jumbled charm necklaces—have discovered a chic new way to bring granny's needlepoint talents out into the night. "The idea of playing dress-up in your grandmother's old relics and completely modernizing them really drove this collection," says Lizzie, the designer in the duo.
One piece that elegantly transcends any musty-crafty stigmas is Sunrise on the Estancia, a sleek evening purse, which required the deft skills of the designers' own grandmother. "She's made me countless needlepoint pillows, belts, and handbags in the past," says Lizzie. "So, this season [we] decided to utilize her handiwork for one of the Fortunato designs."
The geometric-print purse features a long brass chain for easy toting along with goat leather accents for the strap as well as the purse. Adding more of a contrasting twist, this after-dark gem is lined in neon fabric. But if you're thinking this little treasure is going to be seen all over town, think again. "Each bag is made to order," says Lizzie. "With each pattern I've designed being just a little different from the next."
Lizzie Fortunato Jewels "Sunrise on the Estancia" purse, price available upon request, made to order. For more information, go to www.lizziefortunatojewels.com.
