New Years Eve

LateAfternoon
Liz of Late Afternoon's NYE plans involve a bash with plenty of confetti and a smooch for her handsome fiancé at midnight. So, what does a party gal on a romantic streak wear for the biggest night of the year? An eye-catching beaded blouse, pretty-patterned kicks, and a knockout clutch, of course! Just make sure that sack's got enough space for your matching crimson lippy. Now, who's ready to paint the town red?

From Left, Clockwise: Givenchy Rouge Interdit Satin Lipstick in Lively Red, $30, available at Sephora; Topshop High Neck Lace Crystal Top, $60, available at Topshop; Nine West Heartache Black Fabric Print, $53.01, available at 6PM; ChicNova Red Midi Skirt With Concealed Zip, $99, available at ChicNova; Clare Vivier Foldover Clutch, $156, available at Clare Vivier.

CouldIHaveThat
Samantha of Could I Have That? has a lot to look forward to in 2013: a wedding, big things for her blog, and a bit of traveling. If you're a busy bee like this Angeleno, why not incorporate some everyday duds into your look on December 31? Give that slouchy leather jacket the sex appeal it deserves in a tiny metallic mini and black stilettos. Big waves and a chic chapeau will give you a posh head start on the New Year.

From Left, Clockwise: Rick Owens Blister Leather Biker Jacket, $2,441, available at Net-A-Porter; Pendleton Indy Hat, $62, available at Need Supply Co.; Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious Defining Creme, $28, available at Sephora; J. Crew Tissue Long-Sleeve Tee, $32.50, available at J. Crew; Alice + Olivia Yolanda Brocade Mini Skirt, $293, available at MyTheresa; Lanvin Suede Pump in Black, $795, available at Forward by Elyse Walker.

If you're the type to avoid sparkle at all costs on NYE, we suggest you take a cue from Julie of Sincerely, Jules. The combo of badass biker jacket and cutout booties adds just the right amount of toughness to your asymmetrical skirt and oversized sweater. Just don't skip on the shades — you'll need 'em to protect those peepers from all the iPhone flashes directed at your ensemble.

From Left, Clockwise: Karen Walker Anytime Sunglasses, $280, available at TenOverSix; AllSaints Chase Biker Jacket, $550, available at AllSaints; McQ Alexander McQueen Razor Blade-Print Fine-Woven Scarf, $235, available at Net-A-Porter; Reiss Neela Black Mini Wrap Skirt, $51, available at Reiss; Senso Quimat Shoes, $258, available at Need Supply Co.; Mango Lurex Oversized Sweater, $59.99, available at Mango.

200 Cigarettes (1999): On New Year's Eve 1981, sad sack hottie Paul Rudd (bedecked with incredible sideburns) hangs out with his platonic pal Courtney Love. Both struggle to cope with their attraction and demonstrate what happens when good pals just decide to throw caution to the wind.

The Apartment (1960): This adorable Billy Wilder movie forces poor Jack Lemmon to host his lecherous bosses at his apartment. He finds himself falling for one of the mistresses, Shirley MacLaine. After the countdown, Shirley realizes the value of true love is, rushes to his side, shuffles their beloved deck of cards and delivers the now-classic kicker, "Shut up and deal."

While You Were Sleeping (1995): Okay, this is a total cheat because there wasn't an actual kiss that happened on NYE, but the palpable tension between Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman made this rom-com a permanent edition to our girly movie collection. See, they both really like each other but can't do anything about because he thinks she's engaged and she refuses to bust up his family. So instead, he "leans" for an almost-kiss, if you will. And then later, Sandy leans (dreamily against the door, not him) and wistfully sighs, "Happy New Year..." *Tears!*

Strange Days (1995): Remember Strange Days? This cult classic features a down-and-out Ralph Fiennes and a simply kick-ass Angela Basset (and a pre-Oscar Kathryn Bigelow, too). After saving Los Angeles, averting a racial meltdown, and grooving to a cyberpunk soundtrack, these two ring in the New Year with a hot lip-lock in a "futuristic" year 2000.

When Harry Met Sally (1989): "I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour-and-half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it's not because I'm lonely, and it's not because it's New Year's Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." It just never gets old, does it?
