NYC's 3 Best Haunted Houses

There's nothing more bone-chilling than the Overlook Hotel in The Shining, riddled with ghostly twins, a twisted maze, and one sick mofo: It's our worst nightmare, besides being stuck in say, Abercrombie & Fitch with a bad case of the bedbugs. But, if you're like us, you take a perverse satisfaction out of being scared—let's call it very low-grade sadomasochism. Halloween is the best time of year to get our jollies on, fear-wise, and of course we've done some research to help you experience your own "red rum" moments right here in NYC. We're talking Haunted Houses...the pee-in-your pants, seriously scary ones. From an insane asylum that makes us fear for our sanity to more gore than Kill Bill, we've got the three best places to get your Halloween on right. Pleasure is pain, right?

Here are our 3 Best picks for where to scream your lungs out:
1. Blood Manor: Staying true to its name, Blood Manor makes up for the gore our next option, Steampunk, lacks, and then some. The manor includes rooms like the Slithering Snake Pit and the Horridor, but the main attraction is The Heart Chamber, which spews 37 gallons of blood per night. You might want to bring a change of clothes for this one.
Blood Manor , 542 West 27th Street (between 10th and 11th avenues); 212-290-2825 Friday, October 1 through Sunday, October 24, Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., Sundays from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Tuesday, October 26 through Thursday, October 28, from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30, from 7:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday, October 31 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets $30 to $45.
2. Steampunk Haunted House: This Victorian-inspired immersive experience is more performance piece than horror show, but that doesn't mean you won't get spooked as you wander the winding corridors of this century-old playhouse. Hidden inside the labyrinth are artists decked out in gorgeously eerie period-costumes, creaking gear-powered beasts, and phantom-like sleepwalkers lurking around every corner. This haunted house will shock, enchant, and horrify you all within a single visit.
Henry Street Settlement, 466 Grand Street (at Pitt Street); 212-598-0400. Saturday, October 23, Friday, October 29, and Saturday, October 30, from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.; Sunday, October 24, Wednesday, October 27, Thursday, October 28, and Sunday, October 31, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets $10 to $25.
3. Nightmare: Superstitions: Arguably New York's most famous haunted house, this year's version is set in an insane asylum. Visitors to the house confront superstitions in some rooms; if you break them, prepare for seriously dire consequences in the next. .
NOHO Event Center, 623 Broadway (at Houston Street; enter on Mercer Street); 212-929-2963 The hours for this one are literally different almost every day of the week and change with each successive week as we get closer to Halloween. Check the calendar for specific hours. Tickets $30 to $100.
