Northern Lights

Stockholm Fashion Week shines again. By Alexandra Avli. Photography by Kristian Löveborg
Brands like Acne and Cheap Monday continue to prove the world is ready for some serious Northern exposure. And Scandinavia continues to quickly catch up with other ruling fashion cities as a rich source for new and daring designers. Once a touchstone for the avant garde, the latest crop of Scandinavian designers are merging their conceptual roots with something a bit more subdued and wearable. Okay, some of it was not so wearable, but aces for the inspiration. We popped over to Stockholm Fashion Week recently to see what's in store for the coming seasons. While we were mildly disappointed a few of our favorite faces weren't showing: Sandra Backlund, Helena Hörstedt, and Diana Orving to name a few, there was still plenty of posh to write home about. Here are our highlights of the week.

Minimarket
Next spring and summer, the girls behind Minimarket want ladies everywhere to be beaming at maximum intensity with colorful pieces, tailored dresses, statement pants, hats, and ladybirds…maybe not all at once, but there's no telling. Nope, no wallflowers this season.

Cheap Monday
We count on Cheap Monday's dependable printed T-shirts and dishy denim, but next spring the label also adds tops with rolled-up sleeves, dotted pants, and sweet versatile cardis to the everyday mix.

Whyred
Next spring/summer sees a lot of contrast from Whyred, mixing up sharp separates with long flowing gowns or flirty floral dresses.

Acne
Austere and sophisticated was the look of Swedish golden label Acne. While the line is known for clean and mean, this season introduced even more severe cuts and sober shades, mostly likely due to the Bauhaus inspiration.

Carin Wester
Long droopy sweaters and ridiculously relaxed trousers was the look of Carin Wester's spring/summer guy. We're not exactly sure it works for us, but there's something interesting at play with her proportions. Reigning it in could have been the trick.

Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair
One of our fave lines is never short on drama and this season didn't disappoint with stark futuristic white minis, scarlet-red baby-doll dresses on steroids, and glossy plastic windbreakers.
