5 Things To Know This AM

The new Fabergé store is open, and on top of all the opulently decorated eggs and jewelry, it also features a dollhouse-sized replica of the Versailles mansion. Our 8-year-old selves are squealing inside. (Racked)

Apparently the small population of men that regularly get manis and pedis has spoken up: The city has started enforcing a little-known law shooting down sex-based pricing at NYC salons. No longer will men be treated differently, just because their feet are nastier. (Wall Street Journal)

Stop the presses: Anna Wintour was spotted laughing — yes, laughing — at lunch. She enjoyed a humorous lunch at Balthazar with Sarah Jessica Parker, and whatever SJP said, she's clearly got the magic touch with the icy editrix. (Daily News)

Critically-lauded (and heartwarming) flick The Intouchables comes to The Angelika this weekend — check it out if you're looking for a good MDW cry. Plus, the theater is giving away a signed copy of the movie poster. (Facebook)

If you're hungry (that's us!) and find your wallet a little lighter than usual (that's us too!), you need this guide to the best dining deals in the city. Use it to spend as little money as possible, or to get twice as much food as usual. (Eater New York)

15 Fun, Easy Cocktails To Mix This Memorial Day Weekend

Mixed drinks come in many variations, but none are more appreciated than the slow-sipped, hell-yeah-it's-a-long-weekend, poolside cocktail. And we think you deserve several of those. Sure, you may not have fancy garnishes, Cristal, or a sexy bartender to cater to your needs on your back patio rooftop, but that doesn't mean you can't be the master of your own consumption.

To help you play mixologist, we've broken down 15 recipes that are guaranteed to make you the most legendary Memorial Day party host the East Coast has ever seen. With recipes including a Guava Margarita, Coconut Gimlet, and a 98-calorie refresher (cuz let's be honest, you're gonna be in bathing suits, no?), the coolest sips will be a cinch to serve up this holiday weekend. Just please remember to drink (and tan, and swim, and play tennis, and take selfie-pics) responsibly.

The Ultimate Rock N' Roll Club Returns For The Ultimate Rock N' Roll Festival

cbgb

We’re petty sure that even our grandmother (who — love you, grandma — isn’t exactly the hippest broad around) knows CBGB means rock music. Of course, the legendary club where (insert liberty spikes here) punk rock was born shut its doors in 2006. Now, we may not have attended CBGB in its heyday, but that doesn’t mean we weren’t bummed to wave goodbye to the New York landmark. That’s why we’re super excited to put on our favorite band tee and attend the CBGB Festival. The fest, which takes place from July 5 to July 8 across 30 venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, includes four key components: film premieres and screenings, a distilled spirits fest, conferences panels, and (um, obviously) live music.

There are over 300 (count 'em, 300!) bands appearing, which means there will be tons of opportunities to throw up the ol' devil horns (people still do that, right?). The festival stays true to the original CBGB mission by focusing on new music and emerging young bands. Basically, one of these acts could be the next Ramones or Patti Smith, and you’ll get to say you saw them when... Mixed in with these emerging artists are headliners like Cro-Mags, Vision of Disorder, and Sick of It All. We don’t know what it is about summer that makes concerts that much more fun, but we’re fully into it.

Music passes are $79 if you snag ‘em now, but they can be purchased for $89 on the day of the show. More bands will be announced in the coming weeks, but be sure to check out some those that are currently in the line-up below. Here’s hoping one of them plays Freebird!

20 Super-Glam Pics From DVF's Benefit (Hello, Afternoon Color Shock!)

While the weather in the Big Apple might blow today, last night we got to ditch the jackets and roll sleeveless to the Junior Spring Benefit for the Lincoln Center Institute. Held at The Bowery Hotel — which, oh-so-conveniently, we can spy from our office windows —the Diane von Furstenberg-sponsored dinner (and, naturally, after-party) was basically open air; The giant paned glass windows let in a downplayed draft that was mercifully not humid. We almost thought Serena Merriman, the tireless organizer of the annual fundraiser, paid for the breeze: She dramatically opened those heavy velvet curtains and let in le air at the same exact time as the arugula was served.

While hostess Carey Mulligan couldn't make it (re-watching, we hope, Baz Luhrmann's deliciously addictive Gatsby trailer), plenty of young thespians, editors, and general girls-and-guys-about-town took advantage of Mother Nature's easy chill to experiment with color in a way that's got us clicking over to DVF's e-commerce site, like, five minutes ago. Vogue's Valerie Boster donned an electric lilac silk plunger, Lily Kwong neon-ified some Hermès orange, and Chelsea Leyland's patterned Diane frock made us think of sherbert on adderall (oh yeah, our own Kristian Laliberte went for a Seize Sur Vingt suit that could double as a chic traffic cone). Though we stayed for Chairlift's sweet set, the Acme after-hours do just wasn't happening — we had to go home and research tangerine bathing suits. Overnight delivery, obviously.

Andy Samberg Speaks At Harvard, Leaves Us Less Than Inspired

If Andy Samberg were to speak at our college graduation, we'd be psyched. He's funny in a way that makes us think he's legitimately smart (despite some of those digital shorts), and that normally implies a certain level of speech-giving finesse.

However, the culmination of his efforts at Harvard's Class Day yesterday fell a little flat. Sure, there were laughs, but they felt a little too easy. He did his three standard impressions: Mark Zuckerberg, Mark Wahlberg, and Nicholas Cage. He poked fun at himself for not having gone to Harvard. He played a "This Is How We Do It" musical clip. And he bashed Yale and Dartmouth.

In his 22 minutes on stage though, the real advice only came at about 19:37, when he told grads: "make sure whatever it is you try is what you really want to do, because the only person who knows what that really is, is you." Aw and amen to that. But ending a college grad speech with a Dick In A Box joke? Not sure how we'd feel about that, with our parents in the audience. Watch the full-length speech below and tell us if you found it a little bit more inspiring than we did.

André Leon Talley Thinks Even Kim Kardashian Can't Ruin Fashion

r29-andre-leon-talley-scad

This past weekend, we had the privilege of flying down to Savannah, to check out SCAD (the Savannah College of Art & Design). While we were there, we were able to attend one of the best student fashion shows we've ever seen (it ran the gamut from an entirely wearable neoprene collection to some Fiddler on the Roof-inspired menswear), tour the school's insane grounds (including some horseback riding), and check out the SCAD museum's beautiful exhibit dedicated to designer Ralph Rucci.

The highlight of the trip? Ahead of the fashion show, the school hosted an illuminating conversation with Vogue's André Leon Talley (an alum), Ralph Rucci, and Pulitzer Prize-winning fashion journalist, Robin Givhan. The three of them sat down for an hour for an intimate chat about the future of fashion, the role celebrities should play in the industry, and why "buzz" is so priceless, when it comes to making clothes. Ahead, the most memorable takeaways:

ALT, on the celeb-fashion relationship: "At one point, I thought the red carpet had almost killed fashion...but I actually think celebrities do a great deal for fashion. In fact, I can't think of anyone who can take away from fashion. Not even Kim Kardashian."

Rucci, chiming in about the realities of dressing celebs: "I do not not lend clothes out of elitism. But you have to ask, is there is stylist involved, before you send in racks of clothes."

And on the celebs he would (or wouldn't) love to dress: [I'd love to dress] "Tilda Swinton. There's substance there that allows the garment to be understood. But if you're dressing a Kardashian...well...I don't get this Kardashian thing. It's a moment."

Illuminating, no? Click through for some of our favorite looks from the fashion show, and share your thoughts on the great celebs-in-fashion debate, in the comments.

Private Dinner Anyone? The Meatball Shop Opens A Tented Garden In 'Billyburg

meatball-shop

When it comes to favorite summer activities in New York, eating outside is right up there on the top of our list. Somehow, the fresh air just makes food taste better, which is why we were pretty excited to hear The Meatball Shop in Williamsburg will be opening up their tented garden for the summer starting today. In addition to being an, uh, meatball shop, The Meatball Shop serves up daily market salads and creamy ice-cream sandwiches. Of course, the real selling point is the meatballs. They’ve got beef, pork, chicken, and, yes, vegetarian ones.

Okay, now for the...meat of the story. (Sorry, it's just so easy to keep on punning.) The garden which seats about 30 people, will be available for private parties and events. Basically, this means you can be the cool friend that sets up that dinner to remember. The look is 1940s wooden rustic barn with lush greenery, antique chalk boards, and string lights. Guys, this is what Pinterest dreams are made of — we can already imagine making a board just for what we're calling our perfect summer party. (Should we dub it "Holy Balls?"). Plus — yes, there's more — the BK outpost is debuting two community tables that will take reservations of eight to 24 people, with a set family-style menu, an alternative to epicureans that shun the outdoors. Weirdos. Regardless, our address is 30 Cooper Square, just in case you want to shoot us an invite.

The Best Sports Bars In NYC (According To 1/2 Of NAHM)

In the epic battle between East Coast vs. West Coast, Tupac vs. Biggie, New York vs. L.A., the rivalry continues (if not thrives!) with the NBA finals in the coming weeks (even though NY got booted). True, basketball may have unofficially replaced the national pastime (a.k.a. baseball), at least when it comes to vegging out at the edge of your seat, rooting on your favorite team. But who wants to celebrate (or mope) alone? We caught up with New York-based designer Nary Manivong of NAHM (his partner is Ally Hilfiger) to fill us in on the next best thing to court-side seats (sorry Knicks! Better luck next year!). Let's face it, if we left choosing the sports bar to our guys, we'd be chilling in a trashy, LES bro-fest that only serves Pabst and questionable "beer snacks." So, trust, Nary Manivong's picks are grown-up, upscale alternatives to that. You might even impress the boys and still have somewhere to set your bag down without it getting soaked in beer.

Put on your best game face, invite some ladies to keep you company, and check out the classy sports bars on Nary's list.

This Guy Dressed Up As His Dead Mom To Scam The Gov't (Awkward...)

We're all about experimenting with fashion and dressing up on occasion (hello New York Fashion Week!), but this guy takes it to a whole new level. Thomas Prusik-Parkin, a Brooklyn resident, has just been sentenced to a minimum of 13 years in prison for dressing up as his dead mother in order to scam the government. Beyond the obvious Norman Bates ref and disgusting factor of the getup, Prusik-Parkin stole over $44,000 from Uncle Sam and went so far as to don a wig, sunglasses, and dress to do so.
Check out the video on the NY Post to get the full affect via a peek of Prusik-Parkin in action on a bank security cam. After watching, we have to agree with Justice DelGiudice: It's kind of "amazing". (NY Post)

Smash! Bang! Kapow! It’s The Great Gatsby Trailer…

And away we go! Seems Director/ rapacious human/ Four Loko can Baz Luhrmann is doing exactly what he did to William Shakespeare to F. Scott Fitzgerald. Right away, the rich detail, glam, and glitz of the trailer for his The Great Gatsby punches you square in the jaw with an opera-gloved hand. Scored to a Kanye song and featuring the spires of Manhattan rising in CGI glory, the beautiful Carey Mulligan, and Leo DiCaprio's impressive forehead, it looks at least twice as explosive, awesome, and wonderfully over-the-top as anything Luhrmann’s done since Romeo + Juliet. Of course, anyone who’s actually read The Great Gatsby (i.e. 90% of America) might note that the novel isn’t itself explosive or wonderfully over-the-top. It’s a restrained, sad, slow burn — a heartbreaker under glass. This trailer is all silk dresses and digital fireworks. Whatever — faithful in spirit or not, we’re still watching the hell out this blinged-out, manic interpretation of the great American novel come Christmas.

5 Things To Know This AM

Need a humpday treat? Stop by the new Zadig & Voltaire store at The Mark for a super-luxe shopping experience with a not-so-luxe price tag. (Zadig & Voltaire)

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Well, actually just tigers — baby tigers — are being exhibited in a group art show on the LES. Watch the kitties play (and be, like, culturally enriched obvs) weekends through July 8th at Ramiken Crucible. (Animal NY)

Who needs real-life employees when you have holograms? The Port Authority unveiled their new avatar kiosks for all NYC airports this week and she's it's nothing short of freaky. (Gothamist)

Now is the time to take cabs literally everywhere because drivers may soon be raising their prices by 20 per cent. Say it ain't so, Taxi and Limosine Commission, cabs are a luxury as is! (Brokelyn)

Music for everyone! The Brooklyn Academy of Music will soon open a new building and all performances will be just $20. The new space will only house 250 audience members, but compared to the original BAM's ticket costs of up to $180, we'd say these seats are worth the (inevitable) wait time. (NY Daily News)
