15 Fun, Easy Cocktails To Mix This Memorial Day Weekend

Mixed drinks come in many variations, but none are more appreciated than the slow-sipped, hell-yeah-it's-a-long-weekend, poolside cocktail. And we think you deserve several of those. Sure, you may not have fancy garnishes, Cristal, or a sexy bartender to cater to your needs on your back patio rooftop, but that doesn't mean you can't be the master of your own consumption.

To help you play mixologist, we've broken down 15 recipes that are guaranteed to make you the most legendary Memorial Day party host the East Coast has ever seen. With recipes including a Guava Margarita, Coconut Gimlet, and a 98-calorie refresher (cuz let's be honest, you're gonna be in bathing suits, no?), the coolest sips will be a cinch to serve up this holiday weekend. Just please remember to drink (and tan, and swim, and play tennis, and take selfie-pics) responsibly.

Private Dinner Anyone? The Meatball Shop Opens A Tented Garden In 'Billyburg

meatball-shop

When it comes to favorite summer activities in New York, eating outside is right up there on the top of our list. Somehow, the fresh air just makes food taste better, which is why we were pretty excited to hear The Meatball Shop in Williamsburg will be opening up their tented garden for the summer starting today. In addition to being an, uh, meatball shop, The Meatball Shop serves up daily market salads and creamy ice-cream sandwiches. Of course, the real selling point is the meatballs. They’ve got beef, pork, chicken, and, yes, vegetarian ones.

Okay, now for the...meat of the story. (Sorry, it's just so easy to keep on punning.) The garden which seats about 30 people, will be available for private parties and events. Basically, this means you can be the cool friend that sets up that dinner to remember. The look is 1940s wooden rustic barn with lush greenery, antique chalk boards, and string lights. Guys, this is what Pinterest dreams are made of — we can already imagine making a board just for what we're calling our perfect summer party. (Should we dub it "Holy Balls?"). Plus — yes, there's more — the BK outpost is debuting two community tables that will take reservations of eight to 24 people, with a set family-style menu, an alternative to epicureans that shun the outdoors. Weirdos. Regardless, our address is 30 Cooper Square, just in case you want to shoot us an invite.

The Best Sports Bars In NYC (According To 1/2 Of NAHM)

In the epic battle between East Coast vs. West Coast, Tupac vs. Biggie, New York vs. L.A., the rivalry continues (if not thrives!) with the NBA finals in the coming weeks (even though NY got booted). True, basketball may have unofficially replaced the national pastime (a.k.a. baseball), at least when it comes to vegging out at the edge of your seat, rooting on your favorite team. But who wants to celebrate (or mope) alone? We caught up with New York-based designer Nary Manivong of NAHM (his partner is Ally Hilfiger) to fill us in on the next best thing to court-side seats (sorry Knicks! Better luck next year!). Let's face it, if we left choosing the sports bar to our guys, we'd be chilling in a trashy, LES bro-fest that only serves Pabst and questionable "beer snacks." So, trust, Nary Manivong's picks are grown-up, upscale alternatives to that. You might even impress the boys and still have somewhere to set your bag down without it getting soaked in beer.

Put on your best game face, invite some ladies to keep you company, and check out the classy sports bars on Nary's list.

Exclusive: Mrs. Ralph Lauren's Healthy Hamptons Recipes

covercover So, okay, we may not all have houses in the Hamptons and we may not all be married to a famous-beyond-famous designer. But that doesn't mean we can't at least dine like Mrs. Ralph Lauren does. The ever-gorgeous Ricky Lauren just published The Hamptons: Food, Family, And History, and in it, she divulges some of her so-good family recipes.

As foodies, fashion-lovers, and Hamptons enthusiasts to boot, we obviously needed the exclusive scoop. So, we dove head first into the cookbook for three tasty recipes (a breakfast, an entrée, and a dessert) to serve up this weekend (whether we end up pool-side in the Hamptons or not). Plus, since these babies are technically healthy (yes, even those rum-infused brownies), we should all feel no shame in mastering these dishes before bikini season...right?

Click through for some famous eats to serve up this season.

The Best 5 Food Trucks In NYC—Hungry Yet…

New Yorkers are used to instant gratification — we want our coffee served before we can say "with room for milk," we need a cab the moment our arm reaches its full extension (unless, of course, it's the dreaded 5 p.m. shift switch), and we'll be damned if we've got to wait more than 20 minutes for an outdoor table at a popular restaurant during brunch hours. But our fast-fix obsession doesn't mean we're looking to skimp on quality. And we've found the perfect solution in five beloved NYC food trucks — quickly served gourmet dishes that aren't short on flavor but also don't break the bank.

Sure, you've probably seen our favorites — Dosas, Milk Truck, Comme Ci Comme Ça, Taïm, and Frites And Meats — on the block, but we've upped the ante with insider pics and the super-secret scoop on some of their tastiest and most popular mobile plates. From grilled cheese to Indian food to the "best falafel in NYC," these dishes have us wishing it was lunchtime all the time. But hey, there's no rule against that. Now, about that line…

Click through for some foodie-truck favorites and snack-time inspiration.

The Great Yogurt Spill: 36,000 Pounds Of Chobani Down

Froyo, greek yogurt, Pinkberry, 16 Handles, Red Mango.... We cannot turn a corner without being constantly reminded of New York's love for yogurt. But a Chobani spill off a tractor trailer last night, which spread 36,000 pounds of the stuff over Chenango's highways and hillsides might be too much of a good thing. And imagine the smell as it spoils!

For a light treat Governor Cuomo has called New York's "newest and hottest export,"this may be just the negative PR moment that could...sour public opinion. Tell us, how should they clean up the spill? But in the meantime, meet us in Chenango with 36,000 spoons. (NY Mag)

The Worst Post-Date Texts We've Ever Read (Courtesy Of Williamsburg)

Yikes! Candice, a 31-year old New Yorker went out with a man she met in a Williamsburg bar (red flag number one—kidding!), didn't love it, and went on with her life — kind of. The date, who showed up to The Avengers wearing a fedora (red flags two and three, respectively) sent some enthusiastic texts soon after, and was kindly brushed off by Candice. However, Mr. Fedora refused to take "no" for an answer. In increasingly rude SMSs, Mr. F escalated from, "I don't want to waste my time," to the classic "your loss," to an outrageous message "meant for someone else" calling Candice a "5.5 out of 10" and bragging about another promising date with "Nancy." Candice didn't respond, resulting in Mr. F letting her know the message was "not about [her] at all" and that he hopes she is well.

Naturally, Candice sent screen shots of the offending texts to Gawker (thank you technology!) and now we can all get a virtual taste of the wonders and perils of NYC dating. But really, what are we supposed to do with the other six days Girls doesn't air? (Gawker)

Ay Caramba! 3 Delicioso Cinco De Mayo Cocktail Recipes

It's well known (thanks to our all-encompassing margarita guide), that at R29 we never fail to go all-out for any holiday that involves drinking. Some may call us obsessive — we say enthusiastic — but regardless, we'll always have you covered when it comes to celebrating. And, we know that it may not jive with everyone's schedule to launch an all-day bar crawl of the city's best marg joints today (or, maybe you prefer to do your imbibing in the comfort of your own home). Thus, with the help of the cocktail connoisseurs at Milagro Tequila, we've pulled together three refreshing bev recipes you can DIY, tax- and tip-free. Hot bartender (unfortunately) not included.

The ULTIMATE NYC Margarita Map

Margarita Map

Like any good drink, the margarita has a muddled history. Some say it was named after the daughter of a German ambassador in 1941. Others, like cocktail historian David Wondrich, contend that it was a happy accident; a Tijuana bartender was apparently making a brandy-based Daisy, but reached for the tequila instead. After all, the Spanish word for “daisy” is margarita.

Whatever. We only care how they taste. And, with that in mind, we introduce the Refinery29 Margarita Map, your no-brainer guide to quickly finding awesome margs in the nearest ‘hood. On tap, we're serving up classic shaken drinks for the cocktail connoisseur and sweet neon slushies to satisfy your inner spring-breaker. We’ve even cheated a bit to include a few “not-strictly-margarita” margaritas for those of you who like a bit of adventure in your glass. Asking for an extra tequila shot, well, that's up to you.

Genius! A Cocktail Bodega Is Opening On LES, Will Serve Spiked Smoothies

What exactly is a "cocktail bodega" you say? Aside from the purported name of Matt Levine's new LES establishment, we can't help but think of an actual bodega — except with cheap, on-the-go cocktails instead of beers, limes instead of chewing gum, and straws instead of… cigarettes?

Analogies notwithstanding, Levine is no stranger to the LES drinking-and-dining circle. He also owns Sons of Essex and can accredit the popularity of his restaurant-turned-lounge to the always hip Olsen twins and foodie hottie Padma Lakshmi (perhaps he should rename the resto to Daughters of Essex? just sayin'). About six months after opening Sons of Essex, Levine is opting for something more cocktail-focused with Cocktail Bodega, serving up liquor-blended smoothies and spiked fresh-squeezed juices for the late nighters with a health conscience (yes, they do exist).

Soon to open on 205 Chrystie (RIP 205 Club), we're thinking this will be a great place to start — day drinking, hangover drinking, or even pre-gaming — only to hobble up to 141 Chrystie by 2 a.m. when it's finally poppin'. (Bowery Boogie)

Toast The Queen With These Limited-Edition Laduree Macarons!

ladureejubilee01

This year marks the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee — a celebration of the fact that 60 years ago, Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, ascended the steps of Westminster Abbey, sat on King Edward's Chair, donned the crown, and was proclaimed Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland, and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, Queen and Defender of the Faith.

Swell, right?

More importantly, as far as we’re concerned, it’s another occasion for Ladurée to release a fresh box of their o-nom-nomalishious macarons. This time the little treasures come wrapped in a commemorative, Union-Jack-covered box with a royal crown on top and six of their mouthwatering delights inside. It’s the perfect little something to take with you to celebrate Ol’ Liz with a round of tea and cakes. Huzzah!

Ladurée Diamond Jubilee Macarons, $25, available at Ladurée New York, 864 Madison Avenue (between East 70th and East 71st streets); 646-558-315, or online at Ladurée.
