The 5 Best Hits Of A NYC Summer

Hey, hot child — if you haven't gotten the (29-point) memo, it's practically summer in the city. Summer is a season in which we want to experience it all (even beyond the five boroughs!), so we've compiled a list of the top local things that we can't wait to have back in our lives. Don't just take our word on it — these warm-weather activity ideas were inspired by you, our readers, who weighed in on their fave forms of summer fun. Slather on the SPF, slip into those sandals (reminder: prep with a pedi), and enjoy. These might be fairly close-by activities, but the summer possibilities are endless.

Geek Out At Internet Week With Refinery29 (We Have Your Passes!)

618x200_Chic

We love the Internet. Aside from the fact that, hey, you are reading us on it, a defining facet of the R29 crew is that we thrive online. Of course, we enjoy an occasional cat GIF, but in the last 10, five, or even two years, digital interconnectedness has made the fashion world much more robust. We tweet questions to designers, turn to Pinterest for inspiration, and sit "front row" to runway shows taking place on the other side of the world. (And, yes: Videos of kitties jumping in boxes.) Clearly, the web is our heaven.

Which is why Internet Week New York is just as important to us as the tents in September and February — it is just as much a part of our industry. (Though, admittedly, we get more sleep and less blisters at IWNY.) To anyone who gets their news online (i.e., everyone), this week is chock-full of poignant panels tackling creativity on the Internet, unpacking the role of Pinterest and Instagram, and discussing why fashion rules the web. Even R29 will drop some knowledge, with founder Philippe von Borries as a key speaker discussing how the internet has made fashion and commerce accessible to the masses.

Since IWNY is relevant to anyone working in media, tech, journalism, or fashion (in other words, New York City), R29 is giving away not one, but 50 passes to the conference. Not only does that mean up-close access to these great panels (including, ahem, R29's), but that means all the perks, too — from Uber vouchers to the invite-only parties. Just sign up below to enter to be one of our 50 guests to IWNY. You'll walk away with loads of insider knowledge, crucial new contacts, and a glimpse into the future. And maybe a new favorite place to find cat GIFs.

Get In Line Now: Uniqlo's Fifth Avenue Flagship Opens In 2 Days!

cubePhoto2x2-001

In preparation for the opening of their Fifth Avenue flagship, Uniqlo has been popping up all over the city like Anna Wintour during Fashion Week. No, really—for the past month, the Japanese brand has deployed a series of cube-shaped shops (materializing everywhere, from the USS Intrepid to Bryant Park), promoting some sweet new tees and other goods that will be featured in the store once it opens at noon on October 14. And that's not all we have to look forward to; the store is going to have incredible opening-day pricing that'll last until October 30 (we're talking denim for less than $10, while supplies last, and cashmere for under $60!), and the first 30,000 customers will get a free tote. We're also waiting on pins and needles for the final installment of Jil Sander's so-chic-it-hurts +J Collection which drops on November 2. Click here to check out where the remaining pop-ups will land, and make sure you clear your schedule for October 14—you're going to want to spend plenty of time browsing these goods once the doors open.

Style Showdown! 5 Bloggers Go Head To Head For Their Dream DVF Outfits

image1

Admit it, you've walked into a store and wished that you could start ripping clothing off the racks to style your dream outfit--gratis, of course. While for most of us this fantasy stays just that, five lucky style bloggers recently had the opportunity to take over Diane von Furstenberg's Soho store to create their own outfits centered around a killer pair of shoes from the designer's fall collection. The boots, heels, and flats combine sexy straps, earthy colors, and cold-weather approved materials to help you make a killer statement when the air starts to chill. As for the style icons, they're certainly no strangers to the blogosphere: no doubt you already know the sweet and sexy style of Keiko Lynn, the laid-back but glam outfits of My Style Pill's Christine Cameron, the budget-friendly finds of Saucie Glossie's Lindsey Calla, Brooklyn Blonde Helena's drool-worthy accessories, and Little Black List Tess' carefree, boho vibe. We've got the low-down on the outfits these glam girls created, but here's the catch--only one of them gets to keep their creation, and you're in complete control of the results. Click through and check out the details about girls and their outfits, and vote on which blogger deserves to claim her ultimate style prize.

Get Your Hands On U.S. Open Star Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova's Custom miadidas Kicks

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Russian tennis pro of U.S. Open fame and feature athlete, loves miadidas, and YOU can have them. For FREE. It goes without saying here at Refinery29 that when others are watching athletes rule their sports, we're paying attention to what they're rocking on and off the court. Currently champing the U.S. Open Women's Singles performances to the quarter finals against Serena Willams, Anastasia's fly moves and even more fly gear caught our eyes. With 103 career wins on the court and a habit for painting her nails before games, we're suddenly crushing on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and seeing tennis chic in full play. Enter our dream combo of the two: Anastasia's fresh kick miadidas design for Adidas sportswear: the Barricade shoes. Embroidered with her nickname, featuring her home country flag, and in her personal favorite color, Anastasia's tennis flair is awesomely reflective of her background. Watching them perform in match after match in her singles events, we can vouch for what these puppies can take and why she loves her sneaks. If these kicks can give Anastasia enough power support to face Williams, we're betting they can support us, too... especially getting to work or the gym on time.

Wanna compete with us to grab Anastasia's miadidas tennis sneakers? Here's the twist: NO payment, just a story. Tell Adidas on their auction page how Anastasia's or any other featured artist or athlete's custom kicks are the ones that will inspire you before midnight on September 11. The story with the most "Likes" wins the shoes of their choice straight from their answer—certificate of authenticity and all. Let the story bidding begin!

Score 2 Tickets To This Exclusive Artspace FNO Party At The Mondrian Soho!

In celebration of New York Fashion Week, fashion notables including Refinery29's very own Senior Editor, Kristian Laliberte, were asked by online-art marketplace Artspace (who work to make art accessible to folks like you and me) to curate special collections. Kristian's collection titled "Never Nude" (an Arrested Development reference, perhaps?) is thoughtful, eclectic, and confirms what we always knew about his impeccable taste.

And the Fashion Week celebrations don't end there... This Friday, Artspace (together with Chicago's fabulous fashion store Ikram) will be hosting an invite-only event at the Mondrian Soho rooftop to honor artist, professor, and Chairman of the Graduate Fashion Program at The Art Institute of Chicago, Nick Cave. Over the last decade, Mr. Cave has become known for creating what The New York Times refers to as colorful, extravagant sculptures with a kind of double life—with his works equally able to stand alone in galleries or be worn by dancers as vehicles for sound and movement. Intrigued? Excited? So are we. And with two of Mr. Cave's new works to be introduced at the party, this is one hot event. Of course, we at Refinery29 always take care of our beloved readers, and this time is no exception. Up for grabs are two tickets (for two readers, plus one guest each) to attend Friday's exclusive, invite-only party.

To win, simply head over to this special link on the Artspace website and enter.

Spin Social: It Girl Becka Diamond's Nighttime Passion For Pickleback & All-Black…

Becka Diamond says NYC may be one of the only cities to go crazy with your personal style choices. If that means rocking two killer leather jackets in one night like this platinum-haired Brooklynite, we’ll gladly be crazy, too. The stylist/actress turned DJ is not just the girl of the moment; she is constantly landing on the map for mixing at the hottest industry parties. Not to mention, her closet is one of the most coveted in her home base of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. But Diamond sure isn't just a pretty face: She’s the one who brings the music that keeps the party going—from old school and rock to new age and punk. Matched with her edgy-elegant style, Diamond is the Downtown girl we love to keep dibs on. A fan of all-black clothing, she switched it up a "touch" by opting for a femme navy-blue number as she visited some of her favorite local hangouts—and we got to come along for the ride. Lucky for us, Diamond is always happy to share a Pickleback shot with friends...in between DJ sets, of course.

Spin Social: A Night In The Life Of DJ Florencia Galarza

With three years of rocking NYC's turntables under her belt, Florencia Galarza has her style down to a T, whether she’s making a dance-floor shake or she's pre-gaming at the city’s best-kept secrets. Describing her style as “relaxed-but-cute,” she slips as easily into her interchangeable A|X separates as she does into her after-dark routine. The SoHo-Nolita cusp is pulsing with energy as Florencia lights up the night at Mexican hotspot La Esquina for tacos and tequila, followed by Rubirosa for some of our favorite thin-crust pizza (and vino, too). Before she hits the decks at Madam Wong's, she changes out her chambray work shirt for a vibrant red cardigan—both are a perfect 10 over her high-waisted pin-striped skirt. Now, it's time to join us for a late-night stroll alongside Florencia Galarza as she shows us how really effortless style is put into motion.

A Night In The Life Of DJ May Kwok

As an in-demand DJ and representative responsible for ENK's progressive designer show TMRW, May needs to look polished whether it's 3 p.m. or a.m. In a black, boxy-cut mesh dress with a casual denim jacket thrown on top, May is ready for a gig at the Wooly or Jane (two places you'll see her behind the decks). But by pairing this essential number with a fitted A|X white blazer, she can transition seamlessly from day to night—an important part of May's modus operandi. We recently tagged along with May who not only showed us around her go-to haunts on the Lower East Side, but did it with a little Armani Exchange and a whole lot of personal style.
