Gwyneth Gushes: What It's Like To Be Shot For The Cover Of A Magazine

gwynPerhaps you've forgotten that the half-nakie blonde bombshell on the cover of Harper's Bazaar also happens to be the same singin', dancin', cookin', and sometimes goofy GOOP lady, as well. Today we were reminded of this salient fact when we caught wind of the behind-the-scenes story that captures all the action of the cover shoot — from racks upon racks upon racks of wardrobe options (yes, we die) to beauty touch up after touch up.

One of our favorite moments? When the nearly 40-year old unintentionally presents a rather close competition of "Who Wore It Better" against Karlie Kloss—they both wore the same Anthony Vaccarello dress. While we wont pick a winner (because, well, it's nearly impossible), stylist Andrew Richardson did point out that Gwyn's overall outfits called for a more mature woman. "She's a gorgeous woman who is confident in her body, and I think it's much sexier to see these looks on her, rather than a 19-year-old model," he says. While the leading lady admits that she's not accustomed to such steamy attire, even behind the scenes, we don't suspect for a second that she's anything but a natural. Click over to see even more of the candid (and not so candid) shots. (GOOP)

Veg Out With This Floral-Filled Dazed & Confused Shoot

We're big believers of fashion as art. Always taking fashion photography to the next level, Dazed & Confused's "Super Natural" editorial for January 2012 looks like it should be framed and mounted in a museum — a natural history museum. Photographed by Yelena Yemchuk, who's known for directing most of the music vids for the Smashing Pumpkins, each frame is organic and colorfully stimulating, and the floral theme literally manifests itself as eye "makeup" or "leggings". The meticulously made clothes — which include bright offerings from Peter Pilotto and a host of resort collections — are mixed with gorgeous vegetation. Speaking of vegging...we are perfecting the art of it beautifully, as we click through these stellar shots.

Male Models Go American Psycho For Vice's 1% Photoshoot At OWS

no-defaultVICE Magazine – the publishing equivalent of huffing spray paint – has just dropped another of its often droll, spiky fashion editorials. Demonstrating both our nation's inherit income inequality and the rather sizable cajones of the periodical's fashion editors, the aptly named American Psycho menswear photo essay features a clutch of Patrick Batemanesque models sporting four-figure outfits by Dior Homme, Vivienne Westwood Man, English Laundry, and others amid the throngs of Occupy Wall Street protestors in and around Manhattan's Zuccotti Park. Luckily for the models, the activists seemed to understand the shoot was all in good fun. The result is a spread that is not only a decent editorial with some nice little commentary on the demonstrations, but also a snapshot of a place and time that has already crossed from current events into history, both of fashion and otherwise. Clever, no? (VICE)

James Franco Lands A Metallic Foil Magazine Cover

jamesfrancovman

We can't decide who generates more headlines — Lindsay Lohan or James Franco (not so coincidentally, both actors we think definitely have a prescription to Adderall). Both celebrities are always up to something, though the reasons they're going viral often fall on opposite ends of the high/low cultural spectrum (aka, Lilo's in jail because she steals, while Franco's in jail to dig deep into a role, man).

Case in point: magazine covers. Lohan supposedly posed for the cover of Playboy recently, while Franco's decorating VMAN's latest issue, on newsstands tomorrow. Of course, Franco being Franco, there's a twist—the cover features the actor in metallic foil. And, below, look at his shocking resemblance to James Dean. Whereas, just a guess, but we bet Lohan will, once again, resemble Donatella Versace.

Naturally, these hot grown-up babes were totally photogenic as tots, too. Click through the awww! worthy photos, and fall in love a little bit. (The Cut)

Beyonce Covers Bazaar, But Is The Baby Bump A Fake?

We're crazy in love with Beyoncé. Always have been, always will be. And trust B to turn her big pregnancy announcement into a media bonanza, rubbing her belly at the MTV Video Music Awards to the sounds of living rooms cheering all across America.

Now she's sharing her baby joy with Harper's Bazaar . The November 2011 cover star models Reed Krakoff, Salvatore Ferragamo, and YSL in a high-impact, big-haired portfolio, shot by Terry Richardson. In the story, Knowles dishes on everything from motherhood to, duh, Jay-Z. Not everyone is sharing her glow, though. The Daily Mail UK is reporting on bloggers accusing Beyoncé of faking her baby bump, referencing an interview she gave on Australian TV where it appears that her bump is being squished when she sits down. While haters hate, check out her interview with Bazaar below.

The Most Shocking Lady Gaga Mag Cover? The Queen Monster Without Makeup

For someone who talks a blue streak about being yourself, Lady Gaga rarely applies a little cold cream and lets the see world her sans pancake foundation and glitter eyeshadow. Well, here is your Queen, ya monsters, in the next Harper's Bazaar wearing less makeup than she did on the cover of The Stefani Germanotta Band's Red and Blue. All kidding aside, these impressive pics by Inez & Vinoodh prove that maybe Gaga would be better off if she dropped the pomp and pretense and, every so often, strutted down the red carpet with a light dusting of powder, some clear lip gloss, and a pair of sensible shoes. We mean, it ain't gonna happen, but it's nice to think that it could.

In Defense Of Cathy Horyn: Lady Gaga, Please Sit Down

Hopefully, you've been following Lady Gaga's mostly preposterous columns for V Magazine. It's been a chance to see the world's favorite sensationalist evolve, like a college freshman, from the hungover self-righteousness of her first column, to second-semester signs of budding critical thought.

Her latest sermon is on the perniciousness of what she calls "Extreme Critic Fundamentalism"—a type of harmfully negative fashion journalism practiced, solely it seems, by beloved front-row curmudgeon and New York Times scribe Cathy Horyn. Gaga opens with a question: "Doesn't the integrity of the critic become compromised when their writings are consistently plagued with negativity?…When we can predict the same predictable review from the same predictable reviewer?" It's a valid query and the answer is, "of course." Thing is, in targeting that question toward Horyn and her kind, Gaga has missed something important.

In fashion coverage, cheerleaders outnumber qualified critics 100 to one. The Internet is heavy with posts and pieces heralding the genius of this designer or the transcendental beauty of that product. Rigorous appraisals of fashion are rare and precious.

Despite Gaga's claims to the contrary, Horyn is educated exquisitely in fashion, art history, economics, and many other subjects that make her an outstanding critic. She can be as effusive in praise just as she can be damning with words (both Nicola Formichetti and Gaga herself have felt Horyn's sting). As well, these Extreme Critic Fundementalists—as Gaga calls them—are some of the few people who take fashion seriously, who demand more from it, who, sometimes just through the act of writing, can compel a designer or brand to grow artistically. Rather than upending talented creatives, critics provide an intellectual framework for improvement and innovation.

Gaga is obsessed with citizen journalism, with "the range of artistic and brilliant intellectuals," she hears from every day on Twitter (is she looking at the same Twitter we are?) Democratically she asks, "Why have we decided that one person's opinion matters more than anyone else's." The answer is, we haven't—not really. The world is free to (and usually does) ignore Horyn and stock up on all the dreck it wants. But sometimes, when looking at something new and ambitious, it helps to have a true expert in the room, someone who expects more, someone who knows bullshit when she smells it. Whatever Gaga says about her, Horyn has an excellent nose—one we trust and value.

Does Taylor Lautner Look Masculine On VMAN's Cover?

If it comes down to Team Jacob or Team Edward, we're for the werewolf every time. And in real life, we think Taylor Lautner's fly, too—especially in glossy form. His latest magazine cover comes courtesy of VMAN , who had Steven Klein shoot him for their September issue, on newsstands tomorrow. Though Taylor is usually rather manscaped, we've never seen him looking quite as manicured as this—a strange mix of pretty and rugged that's beautiful in an androgynous way. Fitting, as it's VMAN's "An Inventory Of Masculinity: The Archetypes Issue," which, judging by the range of boys featured inside—Liam Hemsworth, Diego Garcia, Logan Lerman—offers up many different definitions and types of manliness. Subjective for sure... The greasy (spray-tanned?) werewolf thing won't be for everyone, but it's hard to turn away from those magnetic eyes (and man, the eyebrows!). The interview, though, isn't as mesmerizing: Lautner talks about how boring his life is, and says "like" a lot—as in, "But yeah, no, I, you know, I hang out with my friends, family, and kind of just—I don't even know. It's like, when I am not filming, it seems like—I don't even know what I do." Besides not being Robert Pattinson.
What do you think? Is Taylor your masculinity archetype?

A Disgruntled Defecator Is Terrorizing Glamour Magazine

No, this isn't a euphemism for some mystery heckler running amuck in the Condé Nast editorial department… Unfortunately, it's exactly what you think it is. Gawker reports on a strange phenomenon happening inside the Glamour offices.

"For years, the ladies' room of the 16th floor of Glamour has had a mystery shitter who has left enormous packages in various toilets and appeared to purposefully not flush. Despite signs ranging from laminated 'please remember to flush' posters and haikus of middling wit being taped inside each stall, the mystery shitter continues to shit, a silent, odiferous protest against a work environment that regularly keeps staffers there past midnight—3 a.m. nights are not unheard of."

The reasons for the crappy situation (sorry) are a little less juvenile. It seems the pissed-off pooper is silently protesting Glamour's breakneck work environment. (Gawker)
