"The whole jacket should feel…like she's wearing her little brother's jacket," says Thom Browne. Of course, that description fits right into the fashion identity he's built around shrunken silhouettes, often fit with a high rise, ankle crop, and blurred lines between menswear and women's. The difference here is that instead of cropping and hemming for a pedestrian set, Browne's crafting a collection for the incredibly flexible company members of the New York City Ballet.
Browne is one of four designers tasked with designing for the fall season in partnership with four choreographers: Justin Peck, Liam Scarlett, Troy Schumacher, and ballet master Peter Martins. So, if you thought it would be tricky to grand jete in too-tight trousers, imaging twinkling those toes in an ornate Sarah Burton for Alexander MqQueen number. No one said looking that good was easy — and these dancers are pros.
Along with Brown and Burton, print fanatic Mary Katrantzou and red carpet favorite Carolina Herrera are bringing their ready-to-wear aesthetics to the stage. The exclusive video above shows the "explosion of work" — hemline adjusting, custom-appliqué placing, and crafting those tiny shorts — that goes into the killer dancewear. But, we'll have to wait until curtains come up at the fall gala on September 23 to view the whole collection (and the dancing).
