New Year’s Eve might be the biggest party night of the year, so it makes sense that streams on Spotify go through the roof as the clock ticks down.
Last year, the reigning track of NYE celebrations was Abba’s “Happy New Year.” Europe’s 1986 smash hit, “The Final Countdown” was also a popular choice, as were a variety of versions of “Auld Lang Syne” (among them, Rod Stewart’s and Mariah Carey’s).
Pitbull’s “Timber” was also up there when 2013 met 2014, as was Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” Other dance-worthy tracks included Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” and “Hey, Brother.”
On that note, Avicii is available to deejay your very own party this New Year’s Eve without you having to pay the star’s exorbitant appearance fee. What? It’s no lie: He’ll be taking over Spotify’s Fresh Dance Tracks playlist as we close out 2014, so start following it to get in on the turntable action.

When curating your own NYE playlist, you might want to consider other go-to songs: U2’s “New Year’s Day,” Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail,” The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” and Kid Rock’s “Happy New Year.”
I’m betting on Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ collaboration, “Uptown Funk” to be a popular choice on tonight, and not just because it makes me bust out some serious James Brown moves; the song’s ascent since it’s November 10th release has been astronomical, and it’s currently one of the top three streamed songs on Spotify.
I personally intend to be hanging awkwardly from light fixtures while blasting Sia’s drinking-to-excess anthem “Chandelier,” but that doesn’t mean you have to. There’s always Meghan Trainor’s “Lips Are Moving” which is totally fun, and Nick Jonas’ “Jealous” is a big deal right now (but please don’t end the year on a jealous note) as well.
