"Bela Lugosi's Dead" (Bauhaus Cover)
Perhaps embracing its goth-sounding name, English synth-pop duo CHVRCHES has decided to take a crack at covering the Bauhaus classic "Bela Lugosi's Dead." Even with Lauren Mayberry's ever-uplifting vocals, the band keeps things appropriately creepy and succeeds admirably.
"I'm Not Part of Me"
With every recording, Dylan Baldi's indie-rock outfit continues to sound bigger and more confident. "I'm Not Part of Me" shows new maturity and heft to Baldi's songwriting while maintaining a chorus that begs for barroom sing-alongs.
Up-and-coming singer/producer Mas Ysa continues to impress. "Years" is a melancholic outing, with Thomas Arsenault digging deep into loss and longing. It may not be happy, but it sure is beautiful.
"Will Calls [Baths Remix]"
Bath's take on Grizzly Bear's Shields standout "Will Calls" re-imagines the track as a glitchy pop anthem. As off-kilter as things get, Droste's voice still smooths things over, and Will Wiesenfeld leaves the chorus as awesomely huge as ever.
"BRAIN (prod. by Shlohmo)"
L.A. songstress BANKS seems to be coming into her own following her recent tour with The Weeknd. Though "BRAIN" producer Shlohmo gives BANKS plenty of room to breathe, his atmospheric backing does a fantastic job ratcheting up the tension. By the track's end, the song sounds just plain huge.
"Happy (feat. Eddie Chacon)"
The Danish dance producer is readying his follow-up to 2012's Salton Sea, and "Happy" is the latest sample. With a low-key house vibe and vocals courtesy of Eddie Chacon, the track has just enough oomph to get things moving on the dance floor.
