Boots are as representative of fall as Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte, and just like the overpopulated coffee chain, they're everywhere
. From a daring over-the-knee boot to a sexy sandal-like open-toe, the styles are inexhaustible. But we can't buy them all, which is the dilemma reader Natalie faces.
From Santa Monica, Calif., she asks, "What kind of boots should I invest in for the new season?" Since boots aren't the cheapest footwear, what you choose to invest in really depends on what you need. Click ahead for my picks on the boots you need to get for fall, now.
If you’re in the market for a boot that’s everyday practical, consider a mid-boot (i.e., shin-high), which looks fresh, edgy, and very Celine-inspired. And, they're totally appropriate for the office. I like these stunners from Gucci. Gucci Goldie Leather Mid-Calf Boots, $895, available at Net-A-Porter.
To make a head-turning statement, go for a thigh-high boot, which designers from Balmain to Alice & Olivia are embracing. For something a little less over the top, try an above-the-knee boot with a flat heel, such as this one by Stuart Weitzman. Plus, these are so easy to wear with a pair of skinnies, you'll quickly make 'em your go-to shoe of the season. Stuart Weitzman Reserve Over-The-Knee Boot, $598, available at Nordstrom.
If you want to sport fall’s It boot — sanctioned by a consensus of designers from Proenza Schouler to Phillip Lim — slip into an open-toe style. This pair from All Saints will do the trick. All Saints Manifest Strap Boot, $345, available at All Saints.
Personally, I’d choose a boot that’s both functional and spot-on stylish. One that can stand up to winter’s chill and my trekking all over town and, most importantly, would be thoroughly wearable for several years. That's why I'm all over these ankle boots by Dolce Vita and these flashier, buckled boots by Loeffler Randall.
