A California Winter: How To Bundle Up Without Burning Up

It's a mind-numbingly brisk 23 degrees in New York City, and at the Bean in Chicago, it's below freezing. But, here, in my little house in Venice, it's a happy 75. Besides the freak spurt of rain the other day, winter in L.A. is like any other day in the Land Of No Seasons. But, that doesn't mean us Angelenos can't partake in winter styles.
Winter in California means 60-degree mornings, with afternoons of 80 and temperatures plummeting (sort of) to 50 degrees at night. The trick is layer, layer, layer. Read on to see three ways I bundle up this season with finds from T.J.Maxx without burning up.

In the winter, I don't pack away my dresses, but pair them with tights. With chilly mornings by the beach, a cardigan is essential. This one from T.J.Maxx has the perfect thickness, so that it's warm without being too heavy. For more ways on styling a cardi, click here.

Cozy scarves are my favorite — they add that instant wintry feel to any outfit. Scarves are Angelenos' way to feel a part of cold-weather fashion. And, in the cooler months I like to wear red lips, which add a burst of color and warmth to my face.

This designer bag from T.J.Maxx has taken me from spring to winter — seriously, here's how I wore it with chambray. The color looks amazing with deeper blues and jeans, as well as cognacs and gray, the color of the season. It’s also the perfect size to hold my cardigan and scarf if I need to ditch 'em.

Ponchos, while cute aren't the most practical outerwear for warding against sub-freezing temps, which is why they're the perfect winter item for L.A.! I found this one at T.J.Maxx and like pairing it with a long-sleeve top if it's a bit chillier or a T-shirt if it's the usual 75 fare.

Headware might not be completely necessary on the West Coast, but they sure look cute! While beanies are great, they can get too hot since they really do lock in your heat. This knitted headband is perfect because it just covers my ears. You can easily add or remove it, depending on the time of day.

My hands are always freezing, no matter what state I’m in, so I like to keep some leather gloves at the ready. Having colored gloves is just another way to add a style element to your outfit, like this pair from T.J.Maxx. They also make for an easy gift for the holidays in case you're looking for something that's stylish and budget-friendly.

Yes, it's L.A., but you still need to have a topper that's a bit thicker than your go-to blazer. Finding a coat that not only keeps you warm but comes in a fun print, texture, or color is helpful in elevating your winter outfits. I like the primary colors playing off each other here with my red coat, blue skirt, mustard yellow heels from T.J.Maxx. And, the matchy-matchy red lip feels on point for the holidays.

I like layering button-ups under a sweater, with a jacket on top. If it gets too warm I can take the jacket off, and even the sweater for that matter. Then, I’d tuck the button-up into the skirt for a makeshift wardrobe change without any fuss.

If you’re planning a visit to L.A. this winter, make sure to bring some button-ups, light sweaters, and wintry accessory to layer with. So that whether you're sunbathing in Santa Monica or ducking into a coffee shop to escape the rain, you'll be sartorially ready.
