I've always believed that a bag can truly make or break your look, which is why I might have a tendency to collect them. Okay, it's really an obsession — I have over 50 (which is not necessarily a good thing when you live in a NYC apartment). Be it a high-end designer or an indie brand, a great bag does not need to be expensive to be fabulous.
I saw this bowler bag at T.J.Maxx last Saturday — the bright peach color practically screamed my name from across the store. The shape makes it incredibly versatile since it's big enough to stash all of my essentials, but still small enough to keep on my arm for an after-work champy at a hole-in-the-wall wine bar in Chelsea.
I think it's important to make purchases that make you feel good, too. A while back I made a rule that I would only buy pieces that make me feel happy, and this bag definitely fits the bill — a punchy color brightens up even the dreariest days in New York.
Another shopping rule I live by: Invest in the classics — and then wear them to death. To keep them fresh, I layer on trendy pieces to inject a little personality into my look, like this bowler bag. Here, I'm wearing my favorite leather leggings with a trench and ankle boots. They're my go-tos, and the pop of color in the bag totally freshens up the neutrals, keeping the look from feeling boring. I also like how the bag is accented with gold — it adds subtle definition without introducing a whole new color to the look.
