5 Non-Kooky Ways To Wear Dresses Over Pants

I've been watching the dresses-over-trousers trend brew for the last year and it seems it’s here to stay (12 months is an eternity in fashion years!). It’s certainly a smart way to extend your summer dresses' lifespan into fall, but still I wasn't sure about how to pull it off. So, I scoured the Internet to search for real-life (read: off the runway) ways to wear the look. For some of these looks, you'll find that you can use your closet staples, while others may lure you into buying matching prints. Either way, these five tips may inspire you to try out your own dress-over-pant look.

Play With Proportions — Many dress silhouettes work great with trousers, but this one is a foolproof combination that you can wear casually on weekends. The oversized sweater dress pairs easily with a skinny black trouser or leather pant.

Go Monochromatic — A slouchy asymmetrical dress, like this one from ANTHOM’s lookbook, is another great dress silhouette. The key to pulling this off without looking bulky is to keep a monochromatic palette, like the navy blue seen here.

Mix Prints — If you want to stand out, mixing prints is the way to go. This look by Fendi is striking and still chic by keeping the patterns to a few simple colors – so perfect for a night out.

Add A Turtleneck — This is a great example of taking pieces you already have and turning them into a super-chic new look. Wear your favorite gray, slim work trousers and a structured wool dress in a similar tone, then add a crisp white turtleneck.

Try A Maxi Another great example of a dress that pairs well with trousers is a long flowy dress. You can cut through the boho feel by adding a pair of edgy black skinnies.
