Peep A Revenge Star's Uh-mazing Style (And Hancock Park House)!

[UPDATE: This story was originally published on January 20.]
The water cooler convos here at R29 always seem to center around our obsession with ABC's Revenge—we're absolutely, completely consumed with the soapy drama! Be-warned: One episode and you'll be hooked. Watching the premiere, we couldn't help developing another addiction. Specifically Victoria's It Brit minion Ashley, who looked so downright dope (not a bandage dress in sight) that we did some Amanda Clarke Emily Thorne-style digging. Turns out, the part was actually created for ingenue Ashley Madekwe, who not only has acting chops to spare, but is a bonafide fashion blogger, too! So, you can imagine our delight when she invited us in for a Sunday shoot at her historic Hancock Park apartment (fun fact: the show is actually filmed in Manhattan Beach, and Ash has never even seen the Hamptons, ha!), where the self-proclaimed "fashion magpie" put together four bookmark-worthy outfits. After peeping our exclusive, you'll be scheming harder than Tyler to copy Ashley's signature style.

R29: We heard a rumor that you style yourself for the show. What's the process like?
AM: "Jill (the costume designer) shops for items she thinks will work for my character, and then we have fittings each week to see what works. We often alter items to fit perfectly because if we like something, but they don't have my size, we buy it anyway! During the fittings we lay out all the items from Ashley Davenport's closet, and I style each look—adding belts, shoes, jewelry, etc. It's a real collaborative process, and we always have fun.

It's nice talking 'clothes' with someone who loves them as much as Jill, and she's very generous in letting me pick items. I sometimes go online and make wish lists on TopShop for her to buy."

R29: Where do you like to shop for home goods?
AM: "I like the vintage market on Fairfax every Sunday, and I also love TINI. I buy a lot of basic items from West Elm and IKEA."

R29: Who are your fave designers?
AM: "It changes every season, but right now I'm loving all the cute skirts that Miu Miu has. I also want to own about 90% of the Proenza Schouler spring '12 collection."

R29: What spring trends are you excited to wear?
AM: "I'm keen to try a printed shorts suit. I've had my eye on one on ASOS for a while. I'm looking forward to wearing a lot more prints. I also think that sorbet colors will be quite popular."

R29: How would you describe your style to someone who's never met you?

"My grandmother gave me an 'Ashley' necklace when I was a little girl (before Carrie!) and I've traveled around the world with it. When the people at Name My Necklace offered to make me another one, I said no, but had them make me an 'Iddo' ring after my fiance instead. He loves it!"

R29: Tell us about how your blog got started, and what motivates you to do it every day.
AM: "I've always loved fashion blogs, especially the ones about personal style—they really fill the gap between issues of Vogue and Elle. I was inspired by what these girls were doing, and wanted to join in!

Luckily, the boy is a great photographer. There would be no blog without him. I love being part of the blogging community, and taking part in a dialogue about personal style with other bloggers. Reading the comments and commenting on my favorite blogs is a huge part of my day. I think Aimee from Song of Style has awesome style. I follow around 50 blogs, and I'm always looking for new ones."

"I like girls who have a nonchalance to their look. I think Kate Bosworth, Alexa Chung, and Nicole Richie all have this quality."

R29: How do you use clothing to help you get into character?
AM: "It's different for every part that you play, but when it comes to Ashley Davenport, I don't feel like her until we've cinched in the waist of her outfit. We nearly always have a waist! The heels play a big part, too. I think she's only worn flats once!"

"I have a leather jacket obsession. I've been buying them since I was a teenager in different cuts and colors—nearly always some variation of 'biker.' I recently invested in a Balenciaga one. The leather on this thing is like butter, and I literally wore it every day for two weeks straight. I had to wean myself off of it!"

R29: You're getting married in June, can you picture your dream wedding?
AM: "Just loved ones, good food, and good music! I've left the bulk of planning to my friend Daren—he's back in London where the wedding will be held. When I called him to announce my engagement, his reply was 'we're getting married!'"

R29: Let's cut to the chase, were dying to know, do you have a dress yet?
AM: "I haven't chosen a gown yet. There is a a Jenny Packham piece that I've seen and love, but I've yet to make a choice. I went to two very fabulous weddings last year where one bride wore custom Givenchy, and the other Alexander McQueen. They both gave me lots of inspiration for my day."

R29: Are you going to let your bridesmaids have a say on what they’ll be wearing?
AM: "I only have three bridesmaids, and they of course have a say in their dress! We all agree on blush for the color."

R29: You are a trained dancer in both flamenco and period dancing. Are you planning a unique first dance?
AM: "We studied flamenco and period dance at the drama school I attended (RADA), but I am by no means what you'd call 'trained!' Someone added that to my Wikipedia page, and even when we take it down, it keeps appearing! I leave it up now because it makes me laugh. I'm actually planning to avoid the first dance all together!"

R29: What’s your ideal playlist for your wedding?
AM: "I have a couple of friends who are DJs, so I imagine they'll play lots of old school hip-hop with plenty of Notorious B.I.G., and some Motown classics thrown in for good measure."

"I like the idea of Ashley Davenport being an English girl, and wearing English items from TopShop or Mulberry, for example. When we first started shooting Revenge, I pulled lots of inspiration pictures of what I wanted the character to look like, and we kept coming back to an image of Olivia Palermo. We still reference her in our fittings sometimes."

R29: What do you gravitate towards when you are shopping? Are you more of a shoe girl or jewelry gal?
AM: "I don't play favorites when I shop; I just go where my shopping spirit takes me!"

R29: What do you miss most about the UK? And what's your fave part about moving to the Best Coast?
AM: "I miss walking around Soho, and I miss sitting in cafés and people watching. There's not very much foot traffic here in L.A., so the people watching is a little dry! Los Angeles has the benefit of great weather, and waking up to sunshine every day does put a pep in your step!"

R29: Aside from weather, what do you think the biggest difference between Londoner and Angeleno style is?
AM: "I think that weather plays a HUGE part in the way that a London girl dresses! It's sooooooo cold during winter that we have to make black tights work with our outfits, or we would freeze to death! We also become masters at layering because whilst its cold outside, the tube (subway) is hot and sweaty, and you have to shed a layer or two."

"Sometimes I put looks together specifically for the blog, but mostly we just shoot what I'm wearing that day. It's really made me utilise all of my wardrobe and not just rely on the same items day after day."

R29: Tell us about that beautiful vintage hand ring!
AM: "My dad let me help pick a gift for my mum when I was a little girl, and I chose the hand ring. I've always loved it, and when I moved to NY, she finally let me have it. A few years later when we moved to L.A., she gave up a snake ring, too. She says I keep moving just to get her jewelry!"

R29: What are some of your most treasured pieces?
AM: "All of the jewelry that was given to me by mum is really special, and anything that the boy has given me—especially my engagement ring! Other than that, I love bags and keep them all. I have a purple Chanel bag that was gift from a girl friend of mine. It wasn't my birthday or any special occasion it was a 'just because,' and I treasure it all the more for that."

R29: "Would you ever want to live in the Hamptons where your character lives?
AM: "I have never even been to the Hamptons, ha! I spent six months in NY, and it never really appealed to me. I'm a city girl, and am definitely not into the preppy look!

"Oscar has been with us for four years. He's an international cat! He's lived in London, NY, and L.A. I can't bear to leave him behind, and even though we have to move a lot for work, having him with us makes it feel like like home."
