Sound-tracking: iPhone's New Druggy Sensation, A Teen that Talks to Ghosts, and Portishead's Foray Into Outsider Art...
iPhone in Wonderland: The brainchild of a few gadget-loving Europeans, RjDj is a groundbreaking new iPhone app that transforms your surroundings into instant sound art. "RjDj is mainly consumed with headphones. The consumer experience of RjDj is similar to the effects of drugs. Drugs affect our sensory perception, and so does RjDj. RjDj is a mind-twisting hearing sensation." Future Daze: Bombastic and neon-lined, the songs of French electronic rockers M83 take melodic doses of emo and postpunk for your inner sullen teen and weld them to sheets of shoegaze guitar fury and epic opera synths. Minimal it's not--they're full-bred futuristic rock symphonies, equally heavy on heartbreak and effects pedals. If M83 was a movie, it would be directed by Kubrick with a script by John Hughes. The video for their searing "Don't Save Us From the Flames" stars the adorable Diva Dompe [of Blackblack] as a lonely teen who talks to ghosts. Vinyl lovers can rejoice as Mute Records is turning out M83's entire catalog on wax this month, including their most recent full-length Saturdays = Youth. Webster Hall plays host to M83 next week, Nov. 14th. Sound and vision: Portishead mastermind Geoff Barrow has just opened "the smallest art gallery in the world...ever" in his hometown Bristol--check the site for a collection specializing in outsider art. The Matthew Marks Gallery in New York is currently showing off new photos from large-scale visionary Andreas Gursky, this time focusing on rave parties and German club kids.
