I’ve been charmed by Coco Rocha for years, and while I was originally struck by her beauty, it is her depth of character and grace that ultimately won me over. I was thrilled to have a chance to chat with Coco about spending time with her daughter, Ioni, being a new mother, traveling as a family, and her pregnancy style. Check out my conversation with the chameleon model below.

Your photos and videos with Ioni on Instagram are so ridiculously adorable — and Ioni already has more than 35K Instagram followers! Does that surprise you?
"I didn’t originally intend to give her an Instagram account, to be honest. While I was pregnant, I was using the hashtag #babyconran for her (which is my married last name), and I started randomly seeing other women tag their pictures with #babyconran, which was weird… Then someone took the @BabyConran username and started calling themselves Baby Conran, which was even weirder.

"Before we announced Ioni’s name, I knew I didn’t want that to happen again. The fact that she has 35k followers is hilarious to me. I hoped my friends and family would check it out to see updates on Ioni, but I guess she has quite the extended fan base now. I’m sure by the time she is old enough to use social media herself, Instagram will long be obsolete, so she may never know."

What has changed from your pre-baby life?
"As a model I travel pretty extensively, but I’m so lucky in that I work with my husband, who manages my career, so we usually get to travel together. It’s the three of us now, the three amigos, all day, everyday. I love it, and we wouldn’t want it any other way."

What's been your proudest mom moment?
"I haven’t slept through the night in three months now, but somehow I’ve kept it together and haven’t had a melt down…yet. Ioni is slowly but surely giving me more and more rest each night, so I feel like there is light on the horizon. I’m a girl who loves her sleep, so that was huge for me."

What is your current “uniform”?

"At home, I’m a jeans-and-T-shirt type of girl."

Who are some of your mom crushes?
"I love following Eva Amurri Martino on Instagram. She’s a great mom and she cracks me up all day. Her little girl is a few months older than Ioni, so I’m always interested to see whats around the corner for me when I see her daughter. My friend Rebecca Minkoff is an amazing mother too; she and her family came over to cook me dinner at my house not long after Ioni was born. Seeing her multitask with her babies is so amazing and inspiring."

What was your style like when you were a kid/teen?
"So bad! I came into this business knowing nothing about fashion. I was a young girl from Vancouver, Canada who wore boot-cut jeans and an oversized sweatshirt every day to school."

What about your go-to pieces for pregnancy? What did you wear?
"For me, my style was always the same. I tried to keep my own personal style, even as the bump grew. I don’t understand when women think you have to give up being you to become a mother. Mom jeans are not part of the job description! Granted, I do have to wash my clothes far more often thanks to Ioni’s little spit-ups, but pregnant or not, you’ll still see me in stiletto’s and cocktail dresses, or jeans and a leather jacket."

Do you have any style tips for pregnant moms?
"Don’t try to hide the bump! Usually the first thing people assume is that you want to disguise it or cover it up. Pregnancy is a wonderful thing and nothing to be ashamed of. Don’t be shy of form-fitting clothing; you don’t need to wear tents just because you’re eight months pregnant."

What's the best piece of advice you’d give to your younger self?
"One of the most valuable things anyone ever told me was, 'It's nice to be important, but it's important to be nice.' I think treating everyone with the utmost respect is vital to a healthy view of self and others."

What is your philosophy on motherhood, and what kind of role model do you want to be to Ioni?
"I’m sort of learning as I go along. I can’t say I have all the answers, but I’m open to finding them. I want to be a good role model to Ioni, to be consistent in word and deed. I hope to continue to make good decisions that she can be proud of, and to instill good values in her through my own example."

How do "giving back" and "paying it forward" play a role in your work and the projects you are involved in?
"All the charities I work with — Senhoa, DKMS, Coalition for the Homeless — they all benefit children. While I certainly believe in charities that help people of all ages, I think children, and especially orphans, are the most deserving of our time. Adults can often pick themselves up and out of a desperate situation, but children depend on us to survive."

Where is your happy place?
"…at home."
